Summary


Healthcare Scientist (Bioinformatics Development)

The North-West Genomic Laboratory Hub (NW-GLH) is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, based at St. Mary’s Hospital and an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Scientist (Bioinformatics) to join the team.

The postholder will work within the NHS rare and inherited disease NHS genomic network of excellence team in Manchester (https://www.england.nhs.uk/genomics/nhs-genomic-networks-of-excellence/#rare-and-inherited-disease).

The focus of this NHS Network of Excellence is to help patients get a diagnosis faster; reduce genomic health inequalities; develop new testing approaches, increase the efficiency of analysis; and increase capacity for rare condition clinical trials.

The postholder will also work closely with the teams of the Rare Conditions and Advanced Diagnostics themes of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) (https://www.manchesterbrc.nihr.ac.uk/our-research/rare-conditions/) and the University of Manchester (UoM) research group of Prof Siddharth Banka (https://research.manchester.ac.uk/en/persons/siddharth.banka).



The Manchester BRC was awarded more than £60 million (2022-27) and is driving forward pioneering research in the areas of high-burden under-researched conditions.

This is a 2 year fixed-term (full-time post).



The postholder is expected to be a postdoctoral scientist who will utilise their specialist scientist and technical expertise in bioinformatics (genomics).

The role will include:

(i) Evaluation of published developments and innovations and their transfer into clinical practice.

(ii) Project supervision including training staff, trainees, visitors and students.

(ii) Evaluation and implementation of new methods, technologies and tools.

(iv) Verification and validation of new clinical diagnostic assays to a standard which permits their diagnostic application in both rare disease and cancer genomics.



Notes:

(i) Interviews may be in person or online.

(ii) Visiting the laboratory in advance of interview will not normally be possible.

(iii) The NW-GLH operates a 6 day delivery model and therefore new applicants should be aware that they will be required to work a rota pattern to support this, which will include occasional Saturday and Bank Holiday working.
