Summary


This is an exciting post for 12 months aimed at a trainee who has completed Internal Medical Training wishing to gain further experience & training in gastroenterology prior to commencement of specialty training. The successful applicant will spend 12 months within the Department of Gastroenterology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital within Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post will also be expected to include the medical on calls i.e. registrar slots on the GIM rota.

The role will be vacant from June 2024, but applicants completing IMT in July 2024 are welcomed.



The successful candidate will be assigned an educational supervisor and receive training in luminal gastroenterology, hepatology and an aim to receive training in endoscopy. They will receive full exposure to both in and out patient luminal gastroenterology and hepatology. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake audit, quality improvement and research projects, as well as to attend clinical governance meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings and Multi Disciplinary Team meetings.



The post will also involve being a dedicated undergraduate coordinator for medical students from the University of Liverpool. The coordinator would be expected to devise timetables, be an educational supervisor and deliver teaching to medical students.

If there are no suitable applicants with completion of Internal Medical Training, consideration will be given to applicants with completion of Foundation Training only. The timetable would be amended accordingly, with work being ward-based when not coordinating or teaching undergraduates.

The department cares for a wide variety of digestive diseases and has specialist interest and expertise in the sub-specialties of Luminal Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy. There are interests in Liver Diseases, Upper Gastrointestinal Disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Advanced Endoscopy and Neuroendocrine tumors. We have multiple specialist nurses within each subspecialty.

The department has an in-patient bed base consisting of beds located on two wards: 4A which has 24 beds and 4D which has 28 beds and a Gastro Ambulatory unit. We are well supported by the Interventional Radiology department undertaking TIPSS, trans-jugular liver biopsies and supporting complex gastrointestinal bleeding. The gastroenterology consultants provide in-reach to A&E and the Medical Admissions Unit Monday to Friday. We have a very active research program in addition to collaboration with other academic departments.
