About the role

Trees provide social, environmental, and economic benefits to St Albans. This is a key and exciting role where you will work as part of a professional team responsible for conserving and managing the Council’s trees and woodlands. This entails surveying trees, liaison with contractors, making safety critical decisions and managing public and Councillor relations.

In this role you will provide specialist professional landscape & arboricultural knowledge and advice whilst seeking to safeguard the district’s natural heritage, promote environmental quality for the people, businesses, and community of St Albans. A key part of the role is to ensure compliance with statutory provisions and corporate policy.

We manage 49,000 trees, have over 1,000 Tree Preservation Orders, and there are more than 19 Conservation Areas. The team advise on a proportion of the 3,500 planning applications submitted every year where they have implications for significant trees as well as managing approximately 800 applications for tree works including Conservation Area notifications.

St Albans has a higher-than-average tree canopy cover at over 23%, which needs to be maintained and enhanced. Development pressure, climate change, and an ageing tree population, requires the Council to apply the highest standards of arboricultural principles and practice to protect trees and to maintain and enhance the quality of the local environment.

About you

We are looking for someone with drive, enthusiasm and initiative who can deliver high quality arboricultural and landscape advice efficiently and effectively. You will be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline and have an up to date working knowledge of planning legislation, Tree Preservation Orders, and experience of using GIS/CAD. A knowledge of Local Government Tree Management and Health & Safety issues relating to trees is essential.

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Set within green belt, off the M25, A1M and M1 the District includes a cathedral, vibrant city centre and award-winning market and thriving villages. Our centrally located offices in the city are near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.

In addition to working within a great team and a comprehensive salary you will have access to:
• 28.5 days basic annual leave (increasing with service) + bank holidays.
Please note: annual leave will be pro-rated for anyone who does not have a standard full- time pattern of 37 hours over 5 days, e.g. part-timers
• Local Government Pension Scheme with current employer contribution up to 19.7 percent employer contributions
• Flexible working options such as Hybrid Working and Flexi-time
• Staff Parking Permit
• Comprehensive development and training
• Discounted membership at selected local sports and fitness centres
• Access to discounts and benefits via online platform
