Summary

Your new role

As a Senior Technical Advisor within the Road Concept team, you will provide technical assurance and direction on contemporary road layout and operating regimes for all-purpose trunk roads and motorways, including Smart Motorways.

You will help improve existing design standards and help develop new ones that will ensure that the network is fit for the future, balancing the evolving challenges around congestion, road safety, sustainability and the emergence of connected and autonomous vehicles.

As someone with strong experience contributing to the development and/or safety aspects of highway schemes, you will play a pivotal role in helping shape the future of the design standards that underpin them. While experience in smart motorway scheme design/governance is desirable, opportunities to develop in this area will be available for candidates with strong experience in general highway design and safety.

Your work will positively contribute to National Highways’ strategic objectives and will embody the company’s aim that no one should be harmed when travelling or working on the strategic road network.

This role is a full-time opportunity to be based out of any National Highways' office.

What you’ll be leading on

Acting as a subject matter expert in Road Concept technical areas, including Smart Motorways
Supporting colleagues, contractors and suppliers in resolving technical issues relating to schemes
Contributing to the development and improvement of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges documents
Identifying, initiating, and managing appropriate research to inform policy and standards.
Working with others to take forward innovative ideas and solutions.

To be successful

These are the criteria that selection will be based on, and therefore must be clearly demonstrated in your CV.

A relevant degree, engineering qualification or relevant and demonstrable experience.
Proven experience of developing technical solutions and/or providing specialist advice in road layout design, and desirably, Smart Motorways.
Comprehensive knowledge of current design standards for road layout, signalling and/or traffic sign design
Ability to communicate and present outcomes effectively
Experience of working in a project delivery environment.
Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards this.
