Summary

The Data and Analysis Directorate plays a key role in ensuring that the decisions taken in the MoJ – by Ministers, Operational and Policy Leaders and those on the front-line - are informed by first-class evidence, analysis and use of data.

The Chief Statistician and Head of Profession for Statistics plays a pivot role in ensuring that our statistical products and process continue to be government leading, aligning with professional best practice and creating a clear sense of community and purpose for statisticians across the MoJ.

The Courts and People statistics & data team brings together analysts and data experts with a wide remit that includes family, civil and criminal courts and tribunals, the department’s workforce oversight and advice on equalities analysis. The teams work closely with policy, operations, communication teams and other government departments to draw out impactful insight from robust analysis.

This is a pivotal role in our ability to robustly evidence the departments priority outcomes and to harness innovation to deliver new statistical insights for the public good.

Responsibilities

• Lead as the MOJs Chief Statistician and Head of Profession for statistics ensuring that the department complies with the professional standards, championing a statistical approach across the department and growing the influence of the statistical community across MOJ and across government.
• Lead and galvanise the statistics community to best exploit the growth in data accessible from the departments’ digital services – harnessing these data sources and the power of our acclaimed analytical infrastructure to deliver new insights that directly support decision makers and better inform public debate.
• Lead a division of around 50 people in providing data, statistics and insight that actively contribute to the delivery of the department’s Outcome Delivery Plan priority of delivering swift access to justice – ensuring the team is engaged, continually innovating and performing strongly, with a strong emphasis on building on our collaborative, innovative and inclusive culture.
• Alongside the D&A leadership team take collective ownership of leading the data and analytical community and playing an active part in the senior team to develop a strong, diverse and inclusive community.
• Providing leadership, professional oversight and line management to the team, strengthening the capacity and skills of the unit’s and directorate’s staff and driving automation and innovation in our use of data and statistics to support MoJ priorities.
• Building strong links with senior stakeholders within MoJ to ensure that the work of the team is aligned with both short and longer-term policy, operational and data priorities.
