Summary
We are seeking a Salaried GDP will have duties within the Community Dental Service (a clinical directorate), consisting mainly of patient treatment duties, together with the associated management tasks. In addition, the Dentist may participate in undertaking a clinical attachment with a Restorative Consultant.
Birmingham Community Dental Service is an extensive, long established service which provides care for adults and children in priority groups, particularly those with special needs. We are looking for an enthusiastic dentist who has full GDC Registration and excellent interpersonal skills to join our team, which includes Consultants in Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry, Senior Dental Officers and Dental Officers. We are integrated with Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry and participate in outreach training for dental undergraduates and pre-qualification DCPs. Surgeries are well equipped and fully computerised, with facilities for RA and IV sedation. You must be eligible for inclusion on the PCT’s Performers List.
1. The Salaried GDP will discharge responsibilities and undertake duties necessary for the proper fulfilment of the service contract(s) into which the clinical directorate has entered. These will cover the main areas set out below, but may be modified as necessitated by the service agreements or service contracts then in operation.
1. The provision of high quality general dental care to patients resident in the locality served by the clinic under NHS regulations.
1. The examination and appropriate treatment, to a high standard, of people eligible for treatment within the Salaried GDP clinics. The patients include adults and children who do not currently have a GDP.
1. Treatment is to be undertaken at fixed clinics located within Birmingham.
1. The appropriate recall, transfer or discharge of patients at the end of their agreed course of treatment according to NICE guidelines.

Supervision of dental therapists and/or dental hygienists, in accordance with the Ancillary Dental Workers Regulations (1968) and subsequent amendments.
1. Participation in activities relating to the promotion of quality of service, including a system of clinical governance, which involves clinical audit and a peer review process.
1. Participation in the corporate functioning of the clinical directorate, including the processes of:
• business planning;
• resource management;
• compliance with agreed service specifications or contracts;
• performance monitoring.
• As one of a group to clinicians in the directorate, the post holder will be required to accept their full share of responsibility for the performance of the directorate.
1. Oversight of the day-to-day organisation and management of the dental premises at which the dentist works, with particular reference to:
• the management of the clinics to ensure that workload is scheduled and completed on time;
• the maintenance of proper standards appropriate to a clinical area, including control of infection procedures;
• the efficient and effective use of resources;
• the maintenance of confidentiality of personal health data, including patient records, in accordance with established procedures;
• the maintenance of high standards of conduct in relation to patients and the general public;
• the proper application of operational procedures issued regarding the provision of dental services.
1. Encouraged to participate in a clinical attachment with restorative colleagues.
1. Participation in such continuing education or training as may be considered necessary for personal development or organisational needs.
1. Establishing liaison with colleagues in the dental profession, other health care professions and voluntary and local authority organisations, in order to promote:
• the dental and general health care of individual patients;
• the provision of dental services to particular care groups within the population as a part of the overall provision of health care to those groups.
1. Other duties appropriate to the grade, and including special projects, as determined by the Clinical Director.
