Summary

Specialist Grade Haematologist

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic colleague to work in a team of 5 consultants/specialists.

We provide a clinical and laboratory service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2a. Clinical haematology in-patient beds are shared with Integrated Care team. The friendly department has recently been expanded to include two Specialty Doctors, one Junior Clinical Fellow, an Advanced Practitioner, four Clinical Nurse Specialists (one for Haemoglobinopathies), a Cancer Support Worker and two transfusion practitioners. The modern Blood Sciences laboratory is ISO15189 UKAS Accredited

East Lancashire Hospitals Trust (ELHT) holds a weekly independent haemato-oncology MDT, with diagnostic services provided by HMDS Leeds and Radiotherapy services provided by Royal Preston Hospital. The MDT is highly rated in the recent cancer peer review. Autologous transplant services are provided by Royal Victoria Hospital Blackpool.

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine

All major disciplines are included with the exception of Virology and Immunology which are centralised at Preston.

The Haematology MDT at ELHT has met the QSIS standard at a higher level across the region. The diagnostic service is provided by the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Department of Blood Sciences is UKAS accredited.

Applicants are expected to be experienced in all aspects of clinical and laboratory haematology.

Level IIA care is provided in the Trust whilst malignant haematology cases for salvage therapy and high dose therapy are referred to Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Central Manchester Haematology Centres. Given the rising number of haematology cancers an interest in haemato-oncology would be welcomed. Development of areas of specialised expertise is encouraged and would be planned during annual team job planning round. The successful applicant will be expected to work with management and clinical colleagues to further develop the haematology service and achieve the Trust’s key objectives.

Locum cover will not be provided for Holidays and Study leave. An out of hours on call service is provided with an expectation that the out of hours rota would be shared equally amongst the Consultant and Specialist Haematologist team.

The appointee will hold FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent training.

Applicants are required to possess full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)

If a UK trainee, the applicant should be a Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

An annual job plan is agreed with the Clinical Director.
