National Express are looking to recruit an experienced Operations Inspector, based at our Acocks Green garage. The successful candidate will monitor and improve the performance of key services and enhance the customer experience, as well as closely liaise with the Central Control Room to ensure that all services are operating to the optimum level.

What you'll do:

  • Monitor quality from a customer perspective; headway, vehicle cleanliness, destination screens, interior information and publicity, information at bus stops, driver presentation and attitude, driving standards etc
  • Oversee service out/in at garages when instructed and ensure VCR’s are completed fully and correctly by Drivers
  • Ensure all drivers are safe and fit to be at work at all times
  • Demonstrate effective oversight of driver performance, and continuously ensuring effective management of drivers and their performance is being applied
  • Drive buses as required and ensure mileage is completed if relief’s for drivers are needed if qualified to do so
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate in a clear, precise and approachable manner with the Central Control Room, Drivers, Traffic Offices and Engineering teams
  • Assist in cascading information to Drivers where and when necessary, and to give Drivers clear guidelines on diversions and explain routes as appropriate
  • Ensure that Drivers comply with Company Policies and Procedures at all times
  • Ensure good customer care is delivered and promote a positive Company image when communicating with customers and to wear full uniform and appropriate PPE as required
  • Have a good knowledge of legislation and ensure compliance with Drivers Hours Regulations, health and safety regulations and all other Company policies and procedures
  • Monitor other operators activities and to provide appropriate reports
  • Flexibility to physically monitor route performance across all periods of operation. This would include weekends, early, late and split shifts as required
  • Provide support for staff in the event of emergencies. To obtain details of third parties and witness, and take photo’s at the scene as appropriate
  • Regulate services where required by the use of technology (iPads) and inform customers of problems affecting their services
  • Carry out reliability checks of services to ensure the scheduled timetable is maintained and documented as per procedure
  • Adhere to Heath and Safety legislation and any other relevant Acts or Regulations.
  • Attend external meetings with local community groups, local authorities, police, schools etc. as required
  • Monitor the availability and quality of roadside information (printed and electronic) to ensure the best possible information for customers
  • Identify causes of delay and suggest changes to infrastructure conditions (bus shelters, bus priority measures etc.) to create favourable conditions for our customers and for our services to operate in
  • Obtain feedback from staff on the means of improving performance and discuss this with the management team. Working with Operations Supervisors and Central Control Room staff including regulating services and instructing drivers
  • Carry out Driver DQC checks as required.
  • Undertake Drugs and Alcohol checks on staff as required
  • Carry out speed checks on company sites and at other locations as necessary
  • Audit driver equipment such as spit kits, safety equipment etc

What you'll need:

  • PCV license is essential
  • Relevant operational experience in scheduled service environment
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to influence
  • Confidence in dealing with individuals at all levels of the organisation
  • Strong multi-tasking skills
  • Understanding of computer systems and good IT ability
  • Mental Health and Disability Awareness trained
  • Willingness to work towards ILM Level 2 – Team Leading
  • Good computer literacy and competent in using ‘tablets’ or ‘ipads’
