Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen at South West London Pathology, St. George's NHS Foundation Trust Hospital a Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology Department with a focus in Histology.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientists to work on rotation through our department and to help us continue to deliver exceptional, high-quality integrated care to our patients.

An opportunity has arisen within the Cellular Pathology Department for a full time Biomedical Scientist in our Histology Laboratory. The posts are for 37.5 hours a week.

Our refurbished laboratories are spacious, well equipped and embrace lean methodologies such as daytime processing, automated special stains and voice recognition reporting. We provide an extensive range of diagnostic techniques including special stains, immunocytochemistry, molecular testing, OSNA, Moh's, frozen sections and enzyme histochemistry. The department also has specialised neuropathology and perinatal pathology sections.

HCPS registered, and with a good general histology background, you’ll have good leadership, team working and organisational skills, as well as the ability to use your initiative.

The department is an approved training laboratory and has full accreditation. We encourage personal development and actively support the IBMS CPD scheme by holding regular meetings and encouraging attendance at external meetings.

This post is based at St George’s Hospital however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary in addition to working an extended working week of participate on a staggered working rota.

1. To be proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff
2. To undertake a range of diagnostic tests and screening procedures through to initial interpretation
3. Take part in duties at a level of autonomy requiring decision-making but can refer to more senior or medical staff for support
4. To perform work in accordance with the standard operational policies using intermediate theoretical knowledge
5. Ensure that documentation is maintained to the SWL Pathology standard (including electronic records)
6. Identify and report clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy
7. To contribute towards a culture of quality in the department and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within the department consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation
8. To assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance and meeting standards required by external assessment
9. To support all diagnostic procedures provided by the department
10. To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures
11. To carry out corrective action when quality control and assurance procedures indicate loss of performance.
