Summary

The Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) will join the Specialist Support Team at Liaise. They will be responsible for the delivery of effective Speech and Language Therapy services for vulnerable adults residing in residential / supported living services who have Learning Disabilities, Autism, complex needs and/or mental health needs.

To contribute to the high standards of person-centred care provided within Liaise and utilise speech and language therapy skills to effectively assess, treat, and provide ongoing evaluation and support for service users.

To assist the Lead SLT in creating and delivering training programmes to teams to ensure competency in working with service users who have communication and or eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties.

The SLT (Band 5) will work as part of a wider team, as an autonomous professional according to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy ‘Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct’ and the ‘Health and Care Professions Council Regulations’

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


To assess, diagnose and develop evidence-based treatment plans for service users with learning disabilities, autism, additional sensory and/or physical disability, mental health diagnosis and/or challenging behaviour.
To select and apply speech and language therapy assessments for a caseload, addressing communication and/or dysphagia needs.
To instruct and advise regarding the management and care planning of people with speech, language, and communication needs and/or dysphagia.
To ensure the service user is involved in the planning of their care plans and understands and agrees to it.
To monitor and evaluate treatment to measure progress and ensure effectiveness.
To establish effective communication networks with service users and the people supporting them, e.g. support staff, home managers, Specialist Support, etc.
To work collaboratively to facilitate the delivery of integrated therapy at all times.
Manage and prioritise own SLT caseload.
Utilise clinical reasoning to select appropriate assessment techniques to identify the service user’s communication strengths and needs.
To agree appropriate and realistic goals for treatment with the service user and produce a comprehensive treatment plan to achieve these goals.
Develop and adapt practices to meet individual circumstances including cultural and linguistic requirements.
To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
Liaising effectively with other health care professionals and external agencies to support the service user’s treatment plan.
To provide evidence-based training and support to all individuals involved in supporting the service users.
Supervising therapy assistants where required.
Maintain up to date clinical records and write timely reports and correspondence reflecting specialist knowledge in line with RCSLT professional standards.
Represent Speech and Language Therapy team at meetings to reflect the input provided.
To have knowledge and understanding of the application of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
