Summary

About us

The Data Science Research Group at the University of Southampton is based in the Primary Care Research Centre. Our work uses large volumes of complex, heterogeneous, multi-dimensional and often unstructured health datasets. We are a diverse multidisciplinary team conducting high-quality and innovative research addressing complex health and social care challenges of the 21st century. We employ traditional statistical and epidemiological methods, alongside cutting-edge artificial intelligence algorithms to gain insights into real-world problems. This is combined with qualitative research to provide deeper understanding, insights and application of big data findings.

About the role

The Data Science Research Group at the Primary Care Research Centre is recruiting. You will join a successful, fast-paced and high-output interdisciplinary research group to help deliver School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded projects in populations with multiple long-term conditions.

The post holder will be responsible for dissemination activities including; drafting high-quality scientific papers for the team, presenting findings to lay and professional audiences; working with patient contributors to develop ‘plain English’ summaries; and organising community engagement events to share findings with the public. The applicant must have a background in epidemiology, knowledge of big data in health, excellent written and spoken English, and the ability to work at pace to deliver outputs within tight deadlines.

The post is offered full-time for 6 months. The salary for this position will be level 4 (£34,980 to £42,978 per annum)

About you

If you believe you meet the requirements for the post, come and join us to take forward this exciting opportunity. You will be part of an innovative and dynamic research group where you will be valued, included and supported.

You must have experience in writing up findings to publication standards within limited timelines with excellent writing, editing, and communication skills in English. You will have the ability to distil complex ideas and concepts into clear, accessible and engaging written outputs for a range of audiences.

You will have a track record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals, experience in conducting big data statistical analyses (cox, logistic, latent class analysis) and familiarity with using scholarly publication platforms.

You will be able to work to tight deadlines, manage your time independently, be flexible to accommodate project demands and be responsive to requests from line managers and other colleagues. You will possess excellent organisational skills and high professional standards.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
