Summary

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Clinical Research Fellow within the Division of Population Health and Genomics working closely with AstraZeneca. You will lead innovation in the renal clinical trials space in this unique collaboration between the Universities of Glasgow and Dundee, the Scottish Renal Research Network and AstraZeneca, and study for a higher degree over a 2-year period.

We're looking to transform the conduct of renal trials and improve kidney care for patients in Scotland through improving referral networks for studies, deployment of novel data science techniques including ground-breaking machine learning and targeted interventions to improve care at a local level. You will work with Dr Samira Bell (University of Dundee) and a co-clinical supervisor from AstraZeneca to define objectives around driving rapid recruitment into three large CKD clinical trials which are starting in 2024-2025. Your role initially will be to strengthen referral networks between local healthcare providers and the University to improve recruitment of CKD patients to studies who could benefit from further intervention.

You will also work with data scientists within NHS Scotland and AstraZeneca to further develop ways to identify patients for trial recruitment developing risk prediction methodology including machine learning techniques to predict CKD progression. Finally, you'll begin to develop links with your chosen global study team, where you can delve deeply into the science of one of the compounds under development and have the opportunity to participate in science publications with AstraZeneca colleagues.

You will be based at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, one of Europe's largest teaching hospitals where the School of Medicine provides outstanding opportunities in medical education and training supported by world class research facilities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Drive recruitment into 3 large CKD clinical trials.
  • Develop skills in risk prediction methodology including machine learning to identify patients for trial recruitment.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of clinical trials development working with industry.
  • Manage data handling and interpretation of research results and take the lead in writing papers for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.
  • Accumulate a significant body of work of the standard required for submission for examination for a Higher Degree (MD).
  • Keep up to date with recent literature and advances in the field.
  • Present work at internal and external seminars and national/ international conferences as appropriate to enhance the profile of the research group. School of Medicine University of Dundee

Who we are looking for:

  • MB ChB or equivalent.
  • Registered with General Medical Council [GMC] and licensed to practice [or able to be registered if overseas candidate].
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively with staff at all levels.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Good organisational skills including the ability to manage research projects.
  • Evidence of previous research experience is desirable
