Summary

A Vacancy at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic trainee to join our friendly team providing subfertility and assisted conception services to our local population. The role of IVF coordinator is crucial for the smooth running of the service and the quality of care provided to the patients; therefore the successful candidate will be a highly motivated person with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.

The Fertility Centre (TFC) was opened in 1995 and is part of the Department of Private practice which offers the full range of Infertility treatments. We operate across the two trust hospital sites – Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex Hospital. This post will primarily be based at West Middlesex but with opportunity to do regular sessions at the Chelsea and Westminster site.

A range of fertility treatments are provided within The Fertility Centre. These include ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, donor insemination, IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and ovum donation. Many of the patients seen in The Fertility Centre have a male factor problem and a weekly combined clinic allows male factor problems to be reviewed our Consultant Urologist.

The unit currently runs between 500 and 600 cycles of IVF and ICSI per annum and is in the process of increasing its activity. Some patients are funded through the health authority but many are private patients.

The successful applicant will be trained up over the first few weeks in follicle tracking, ovulation induction (O/I) and superovulation and intra uterine insemination (S/O and IUI) and IVF cycle monitoring with a view to independent practice following this.

Miss Kate Maclaran is the Service Director at both Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospital and will support decision making at the weekly multidisciplinary meetings but the Senior Clinical Fellow (SCF) will oversee the day to day running of the patients. The IUI, oocyte collection and embryo transfer procedures are undertaken at The Fertility Centre, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and it will be important to work closely with the team there. There will be opportunities to do sessions at TFC and gain experience in assisted conception procedures such as IUI and oocyte retrieval.

The post holder will also be supported to develop other specialist interest skills. For example training can be provided in outpatient hysteroscopy and Gynaecological Endocrinology. Experience will also be offered in Menopause management if desired. On call for Labour Ward and general Obstetrics can also be incorporated into the timetable if desired by the successful applicant.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East.

We have nearly 6,000 members of staff who care for nearly one million people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children’s, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

We are one of the best performing Foundation Trusts (FTs) in London for A&E waiting times, and mortality rates are better than average. Since the Care Quality Commission last inspected our hospitals we have taken on responsibility for a range of new services. Our new services include:
• Cardiac catheter service and a paediatric assessment unit on the West Middlesex site
• Surgical assessment unit on the Chelsea site
• New sexual health clinic at 10 Hammersmith Broadway
• Virtual fracture clinics
• Learning disabilities passports

Plans are in place for a £20 million expansion to critical care facilities and refurbishment of the children’s unit at West Middlesex, both in partnership with the Trust’s dedicated charity CW+.

Role of the Clinical Fellow:
• Trans abdominal and transvaginal scanning
• Being present and prepared for the multidisciplinary team meetings. This includes preparing patients for presentation and discussion, knowing the details of their case and arranging for the appropriate professionals, (urologist, endocrinologist etc.) to be present or their contribution to be presented during the meeting. Also recording the findings in the medical records and writing the patients as necessary.
• Setting up and coordination of fertility treatments, especially IVF.
• Organising and managing the NHS funding of fertility treatment in collaboration with the patient liaison officer. This includes completing and submitting application forms for funding.
• Database update and clinical audit. It is an essential part of the job to maintain databases according to the instructions of the Clinical lead.
• Outpatient sessions in general infertility and IVF
• Participation in the Quality Management program within The Fertility Centre is a fundamental part of the post holder’s duties.
• Performing some procedures in the treatment room, such as saline scans, endometrial scratch, intrauterine insemination and egg collections.
• Ensure the continued running of the service.
• To teach medical students and other trainees about subfertility and Gynaecological Endocrinology
