Summary

We are seeking applications from an experienced clinician to join us delivering a specialist service to young people with suspected autism and risk of harm to others. The post holder must share our passion and commitment to work with young people with forensic risks and suspected autism to improve their access to a timely assessment and accurate formulations around risk and challenging behaviours. We will consider applications from different allied health professionals who have the right level of experience.

Previous experience working with Autistic people is a key requirement of the role, in addition to experience working in CAMHS with children and young people with complex needs. We are looking for professionals who have an in-depth understanding of the core features of autism and how these may impact on an individual's life, with significant professional experience of working within this field and experience in completing standardized ASD assessments using ADOS, 3DI or ADI-R.

The successful candidate will join a Tier 4 community Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (FCAMHS) based at the Portman Clinic. The postholder will be required to undertake specialist healthcare assessments for young people with suspected autism, as well contribute to risk management and intervention planning.

The postholder will have opportunities for service development and outreach work with other agencies. CPD and regular clinical supervision are promoted within our service.

The Portman Community FCAMHS team is principally a tertiary referral service for locality CAMHS teams and associated agencies and wishes to be accessible to all agencies which may have contact with young people with mental health difficulties who either present serious risk of harm to others or are involved with the criminal justice system.

The core aim of the service is to support professional networks to understand the complex needs of young people who present with significant risk of harm to others through a community consultation model and an emphasis on reflective practice.

The postholder will lead the team driving towards better health outcomes for children and young people in collaboration with NHS England Health and Justice and NHS England Specialised Commissioning. The postholder will be required to understand the diversity needs of the clinical population referred to the service and the impact of racism and socioeconomic deprivation on young people’s emotional well-being and psychosocial development. The post holder will provide highly specialist case consultation and formulation, assessment and brief intervention planning for children and young people referred to the FCAMHS by services across NCL and NEL.

The post is based at the Portman Clinic. The Portman Clinic was founded in 1933 for the specific purpose of studying and treating delinquency and sexual deviancy.

The Portman Clinic is a NHS England commissioned national specialist outpatient clinic offering psychoanalytically orientated assessment, treatment and management for children, adolescents and adults who suffer from problematic sexual behaviours or engage in delinquent, criminal or violent behaviour. Treatment offered is individual, group and couple therapy. The aim of the Portman Clinic is to develop a body of knowledge on criminality, sexual deviancy and violence through its clinical work and to disseminate this expertise through consultancy, teaching and training, research and publication.

We pride ourselves on the quality of the service that we offer and place importance on supporting all our staff to deliver excellence. As well as a clinical caseload, the post holder will have the opportunity to become involved in-service planning and development, research, teaching and training. You will receive regular supervision and the service is committed to CPD.

The post holder will be required to travel to do assessments and interventions in the community and attend professional meetings where necessary, mostly in the London area but also occasionally at other locations in England and Wales.
