Maternity Support Worker – Private Maternity Unit, The Fitzrovia Suite, University College Hospital

Would you like to spend more one-to-one time with your patients and their newborns? At UCLH we are looking for an experienced maternity support workers with outstanding customer service skills to join our growing team and provide dedicated care for our private maternity patients. To be successful in this post, you will need to demonstrate that you can offer excellent customer service to patients alongside a professional, can-do attitude. You will also need to understand and work to the expectations and service standards of private maternity care.

Previous experience of working with private patients is not essential, if you have strong interpersonal skills - if you are new to working with private patients, it will give you a different perspective on patient care, which you will be able to take with you as you continue your career path. UCLH has ambitious plans to develop its private patient services – both by improving processes to support patient care and by significantly increasing income. The private Fitzrovia Ward was fully refurbished in 2022 and now includes two new delivery rooms and 5 postnatal rooms, which has expanded our private service to offer vaginal deliveries as well as C-sections.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK, serving a large and diverse population. We provide academically led acute and specialist services, to people from the local area, from throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. Our vision is to deliver top-quality patient care, excellent education, and world-class research.

We provide first-class acute and specialist services across eight sites:
• University College Hospital (incorporating the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing)
• National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
• Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals
• University College Hospital Grafton Way Building
• Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine
• University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre
• The Hospital for Tropical Diseases
• University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street

We are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of many complex illnesses. UCLH specialises in women’s health and the treatment of cancer, infection, neurological, gastrointestinal and oral disease. It has world class support services including critical care, imaging, nuclear medicine and pathology.

We are committed to sustainability and have pledged to become a carbon net zero health service, embedding sustainable practice throughout UCLH. We have set an ambitious target of net zero for our direct emissions by 2031 and indirect emissions by 2040.

For the full Person Specification and more information regarding the main responsibilities of this role, please refer to the attached Job Description.

A chance to build deeper patient relationships

With lower patient-to-midwife ratios than on NHS wards, a role in private healthcare will give you the opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with your patients, supporting them antenatally, through the birth that is right for them, and then providing them with postnatal care that gives their baby the very best start in life.

A leading centre for maternity and neonatal care

You will be working in one of the leading tertiary referral centres for neonatal care in London, given your experience of supporting women through extremely complex, as well as straightforward pregnancies. Our hospital has a busy level three neonatal unit and you will have the opportunity to further develop transferable skills by working alongside specialist teams in different departments at UCLH.

A commitment to your career

At UCLH we are committed to support you in developing your career, whichever direction you choose. Working with private patients will provide you with an opportunity to emphasise a different set of interpersonal skills, which will be invaluable whether you choose to work in the private or NHS midwifery sector long term. As a private maternity support worker, you will be working closely alongside our dedicated midwifery team and world-class consultants, and, as part of a small team, will be offered plenty of opportunities to take the initiative when it comes to the care of your patients. We also have commissioned links with City, King’s College London and Southbank universities and can offer accelerated career pathways to suitable candidates. All staff working in private healthcare at UCLH are eligible for all the additional benefits our NHS staff receive, including an attractive NHS pension scheme, generous holiday allowances and season ticket loans.

If you want to take your career to the next level and focus on your continued development in private healthcare while still being part of a wider NHS team, come and join our remarkable, growing team.
