Summary


The appointment is a permanent post for consultant cellular pathologist working 3 PA’s per week. The appointment will join the existing team of ten consultant cellular pathologists, currently five based at the Basingstoke Hospital site and five based at the Winchester Hospital site. The post is intended to be part -time and will be for 3 programmed activities. The post will be based remotely but covering work from both Basingstoke and Winchester and liaising with the laboratory in Winchester hospital.

The appointee will be expected to have a broad general experience in diagnostic histopathology but have had specialist experience in haemato-histopathology.

The key points relating to the post are:
• providing the specialist trephine reporting service for HHFT
• Liaising with the laboratory to maintain a high-quality service that has been established and to continue to develop this service

The job plan is for 3 PA working week with no on-call commitment. The post holder and the Chief Executive (or nominee) will review the job plan each year in order to ensure that it meets the objectives of the Trust and the personal development plan of the post holder. The post holder’s job plan will be initially reviewed after 3 months.

Local procedures will be followed in the event of any disagreement over proposed changes, culminating in an appeal to a sub-committee of the Trust Board.

General reporting is currently performed at both the Basingstoke and Winchester sites and includes the specimens described above.

All consultants including the appointee will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust clinical governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit and quality clinical guidelines pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management. There is a Divisional Clinical Governance and Quality Group that meets on a monthly basis.

It is an essential requirement of this post that the appointee can work successfully as part of a team in Histopathology/Cytopathology and as a member of a wider multidisciplinary team. The appointee will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary team meetings. There is a lead pathologist for each of the multidisciplinary meetings held. Consultants are encouraged to attend meetings in which cases that they have reported are discussed.

The department of Cellular Pathology is a single department that is currently based on two sites. The Cellular Pathology laboratory is consolidated on to the Winchester site whilst consultant presence is maintained on both sites. The laboratory participates in appropriate external quality assurance (EQA) schemes. Pathology has a Clinisys fully integrated Laboratory Information System covering all departments. The laboratory system is capable of receiving electronic orders from the rest of the Hospital, reports are visible to the hospital electronically. Facilities exist to search computerised records in histology and cytology for research, audit and teaching purposes. A voice recognition dictation system is available for pathologists to dictate surgical pathology, non-gynaecological cytology and post-mortems.
