Are you considering a career in Emergency Medicine? We are looking for enthusiastic doctors looking to develop their clinical, academic and leadership qualities. We have a proven track record of helping doctors pass the MRCEM and FRCEM exams and go on to become Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

We are a busy Emergency Department in a District General Hospital located in Watford, Hertfordshire. You will be working as a Senior Clinical Fellow within an established Middle Grade tier, ably supported by a dynamic Consultant body.

The main duties will involve: Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients within the ED and CED. Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, others in the team.

Advising the junior doctors and Nurse Practitioners on patient management and Authorising referrals to speciality teams. Liaising with other specialists and GPs as appropriate and leading treatment of patients in the resuscitation area.

This post is for a senior clinical fellow at registrar Level to work in the department of Emergency Medicine at Watford General Hospital. The purpose of the post is to provide shop floor supervision and patient care, and to ensure that the patients in the A&E are afforded rapid assessment and management.

This post will give the successful candidate a unique opportunity to gain experience in acute care from an A&E perspective.

The main service commitment of Clinical Fellows is to provide shop floor support and supervision to the FY2s and Nurse Practitioners and to undertake direct patient care alongside the other middle grades, supervised by the Consultant team.


There is Consultant presence on the shop floor for 16 hours (8 am to midnight), 7 days a week, ensuring Clinical Fellows good support and learning opportunities. The department has initiated new patterns of working to improve performance and integral within these are the ED controller role, Resuscitation lead and the Senior Team for Assessment and Rapid Response (STARR). These roles and processes ensure the early assessment of all patients by a senior decision maker and good oversight of the whole ED. The middle grade doctors within the department as senior clinical decision makers rotate into these roles.

The Consultants are very committed to teaching and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development. The appointee will be expected to already have or to have obtained during the course of the appointment certificates in ATLS, APLS and ALS. Two Clinical Educators have recently been appointed in HEE supported posts, to provide even more dedicated Clinical teaching availability.

The rota is a full shift pattern providing 24-hour cover to the ED with 1:3 weekends. The post holder will be expected to provide mainly out of hours clinical work in the ED which can be negotiable with the rota coordinator. The post holder will contribute to the rota to provide senior EM cover to the department 24 hours a day to maintain high quality consistent patient care and ensure patient safety.

The post holder will be encouraged to participate in several management activities with the specific aim of developing key management skills which are needed in future Consultant posts. The post holder will uphold and display the Trust values of Commitment, Care & Quality in all they do.
