Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated band 6 pharmacy technician to join our Clinical Services team at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Previous ophthalmic pharmacy experience is not required; however, a solid background in providing a pharmacy service within clinical services as well as operational running of pharmacy dispensary services would be essential.
• The post holder will carry out the role of Lead Pharmacy Technician for Clinical Services and assist in the provision of high quality, patient focused, safe, effective, and efficient Clinical Pharmacy Services for Moorfields day-case, in-patients, out-patients, and paediatric patients.
• The post holder will be responsible for supervising the operational activities of the clinical rotational Pharmacists as well as the technical activities of all other staff within Moorfields City Road dispensaries. This includes overseeing the management and coordination of workflow in the dispensaries and monitoring the quality of service provided.
• The post-holder will lead on the delivery of pharmaceutical services provided from the technical-led day-care pharmacy unit ensuring a safe and effective service is delivered to the day-case wards, observation ward and theatres.
• They will act as line manager to Senior Pharmacy Technicians and will be responsible for overseeing the smooth running of day-to-day operational activities and medicines management initiatives. They will provide specialist Pharmacy technical input into medicines optimisation contributing towards both operational and strategic developments.
• They will oversee and support the training of rotational Pharmacist on aspects relating to the technical and operational tasks within the dispensaries and contribute to the education, training, and development of the Pharmacy technical workforce.

Dispensary and Clinical Services
1. To support the Principal Pharmacy Technician for Operational Services in the development of the technical Pharmacy service throughout the Trust and to manage the day-to-day activities within the Pharmacy dispensaries at City Road site to ensure that a safe and efficient service is provided to patients.
1. To supervise the management and prioritisation of the work processes in the City Road dispensaries and to ensure adequate cover is in place at all times to maintain an efficient service, including late shifts and Saturday rotas.
2. To oversee the supply and distribution of Emergency Resus Medication.
4. To provide support for other technical staff in developing specific Standard Operational Policies and Procedures for their area of responsibility within the City Road dispensaries in conjunction with the Specialist Pharmacists, the Lead Pharmacist for Clinical Services, and the Lead Pharmacy Technician for Procurement and Medicines Supply Chain.
5. To ensure adherence to legislation in relation to supply of medicines, collection of prescription charges and exemptions.
6. To ensure that all processes and procedures relating to Controlled Drugs stored within the Pharmacy are adhered to at all times.
7. To contribute to the development of supplementary Patient Information Leaflets and procedural documents relating to the use of unlicensed medicines.
8. To ensure medication safety at all times and that all patients are counselled by appropriately trained members of staff on effective and safe use of their medicines.
9. To ensure that all medication incidents are recorded on the Trust Safeguard system by staff operating in the dispensaries and support the Medication Safety Officer in the investigation, review and closure of these incidents.
10. To implement initiatives resulting in cost-effective use of resources, resulting in improved patient care, and more efficient service.
11. To provide training to all relevant staff on technical procedures within the City Road dispensaries.
12. To communicate effectively with all dispensary and senior Pharmacy staff regarding any medicines management or technical Pharmacy service-related matters.
13. To maintain good working knowledge of all ophthalmic pharmaceutical product developments and new products.
14. To provide information and feedback to the Principal Pharmacy Technician for Operational Services and the Associate Chief Pharmacist for Clinical Pharmacy Services, Governance & Medication Safety with regards to operational and clinical service provision and to provide analysis of data that can be used for strategic development of the service.
15. To resolve, advise on and respond to patient complaints, emergency and non-routine Dispensary and Technical Pharmacy service situations across all City Road dispensaries.
16. To respond to all patient related complaints in a professional and prompt manner providing support to staff working within all City Road dispensaries, addressing patients personally and responding promptly to all verbal and written complaints, carrying out any necessary investigations, drafting a written response to the patient for review by the Associate Chief Pharmacist for Clinical Services and to implement any immediate actions required to avoid replication of the issues arising.
17. To ensure the correct management of stock within City Road dispensaries and clinical areas within outpatient clinics and at ward level.
18. To be an authorised signatory for prescription cash reconciliation and OTC sales reconciliation.
19. To act as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and Medicines Management Technician as per service requirements and needs.
20. To support the implementation of new medicines management strategies and be involved in projects or initiatives that seeks out new opportunities for delivering medicines management across the Trust.
21. To ensure that quality monitoring systems are in place and that these are being used correctly and reported through agreed channels, and that appropriate actions are developed and implemented.
22. To undertake medicines quality management audits, prepare reports and action plans and to raise non-conformance to medicines related standards and support the development and tracking of mitigation plans.
23. To help audit the service against set standards and assist in the review of the service provision within City Road dispensaries.


Supervisory and training responsibilities:
1. Provide day to day supervision, support, and training to rotational pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs).
2. Responsible for the line management of the staff Senior Pharmacy Technicians and other Pharmacy support technical staff.
3. Facilitate clinical and technical assessments for Pharmacy staff working within the City Road Dispensaries to ensure sign-off following a period of induction and training for those staff.
4. Support the Principal Pharmacy Technician for Operational Services in the development of roles for technical staff working within the Pharmacy.


Education and Training
1. To liaise with the Lead Pharmacy Technician for Education & Training (E&T) and the Principal Pharmacy Technician for Operational Services to ensure implementation of any E&T programmes for Pharmacy Technical staff working within the section.
2. To act as an NVQ assessor to support the E&T of Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, ATOs and apprentices within Pharmacy.
3. Act as a role model and provide E&T support on medicines management and processes for new members of staff and those rotating within the Section.
4. Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
5. To contribute to the training of other members of the multidisciplinary team within the Trust as required.
6. Develop and motivate staff to ensure they can and do perform well in their job, contribute towards improvements to the pharmaceutical service and encourage staff to suggest and implement changes to improve pharmaceutical services.


Staff Management
1. To be responsible for recruitment and selection of technical staff and ATOs including advertising, short-listing, interviewing, and selecting staff.
2. To act as direct line manager to Senior Pharmacy Technicians and other technical staff working within Pharmacy and to be responsible for their setting objectives, appraisals, sickness absence and performance management and all related procedures for these groups of staff.
3. Assist in the supervision of all aspects of work by junior staff within the Pharmacy to ensure that procedures are carried out according to local policy and with due regard to the GPhC standards of conduct, ethics, and performance.
4. To be responsible for authorisation of leave for technical staff working within the section. To supervise the management and prioritisation of the work processes within the section to ensure adequate staff cover is in place at all times in order to maintain an efficient service.
5. To liaise with the Principal Pharmacy Technician for Operational Services to ensure appropriate skill mix of technical staff and adequate cover is maintained throughout the department in the event of emergency or unplanned staff absences.
6. To encourage an open attitude to performance and ensure a no-blame culture to enable review of past performance and implement change.
