Summary

CLUB STEWARD - JOB DESCRIPTION
Steward Duties:
Reporting to the Club Secretary, with a dotted reporting line to the Committee, you will be directly responsible for the management of the bar and associated staff.
• Liaise closely with the club’s Secretary and bring to their attention any matters relating to the club’s business or of any known breach of the club’s rules.
• Attend committee meetings at least once per month to report on sales forecasting and staff scheduling and report any complaints, notable comments, perceived issues and altercations.
• Assist the Committee and Club Secretary in the improvement and adherence to transparent and sound financial transaction recording and processes, both for bar transactions and any monies collected for club functions and activities.
• Be consistent in opening and closing the Club at the designated times and in accordance with the Club’s license for the supply and sale of alcohol.
• Ensure that the club premises are opened and closed as required for deliveries and any on-site maintenance etc arranged by the Committee.
• Ensure the Club runs legally at all times.
• Ensure the premises, equipment, stock and cash are secure during periods of closure.
• See that persons not entitled to be on the club’s premises are asked to leave and that persons who are not entitled to be supplied with alcohol are not served.
• Manage all financial transactions, including taking payments, balancing the tills, accurately recording each day’s takings and ensure that cash is stored securely and banked regularly.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the products and services on offer.
• Ensure the efficient replenishment of stocks and manage the regular delivery of stocks to ensure no stock outs, accurately record deliveries and returns.
• Maintain and service the cellar, complete regular stock takes and report any shortfalls.
• Closely monitor bar stocks and turnover, know what is selling well and what isn’t as well. Liaise with suppliers and suggest changes to the products being sold.
• Ensuring that the club adheres to relevant Health & Safety guidelines, especially concerning the bar area, cellar activity.
• Train new employees and develop existing staff to provide excellent service to customers, ensure the bar is staffed appropriately to meet changing demands and quickly resolve conflicts.
• Ensuring that staff are working to expected standards and always providing excellent customer service.
• Diffuse tense situations between customers and/or members of staff to prevent possible safety or legal issues, ejecting unruly persons, if needed.
• Ensure impeccable presentation of all club rooms, staff and self at all times; such that an aesthetically pleasing environment in which to relax is maintained at all times.
• Maintain a fun, safe atmosphere for customers.
• Maintain and develop relationships with suppliers, local business and regular customers.
• Seek, record and utilise customer feedback.
• Drive sales and push the business forward reaching sales targets.
• General bar and floor duties (Clearing tables, pulling pints etc)
• Help develop a robust system of controls and procedures to facilitate the smooth running of the club.
• To drive any initiative, no matter how small, to constantly improve the club atmosphere and environment for all its diverse members, including implementation of such ideas.

Steward Requirements:
The right candidate loves to work and lead cross-functionally, is able to think strategically and tactically, enjoys testing and iterating, has previous experience managing a small team, has a relentless drive, passion, and will roll up his/her sleeves to execute flawlessly.

A focus on driving service delivery excellence while leveraging lean processes and service in ensuring continued delivery will be key to success.

• Experience of running a busy bar, ideally in a social club.
• Experience in all aspects of cellar maintenance and stock control in a bar related role.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
• Strong team lead skills and/or lead barperson experience, including overseeing of staff.
• Good numerical skills and an appreciation of margin and profit with respect to drinks/snacks.
• Positive ‘can do’ attitude with an outgoing and friendly personality.
• Good interpersonal skills and people management skills.
• Must be customer focused and have natural customer service abilities and a passion for customer satisfaction.
• Understanding of Profit and Loss, ability to set and follow budgets and forecast future sales.
• Hard working – prepared to work over and above the call of duty, roll up sleeves and get stuck in - leads from the front and by example.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to diffuse tense situations and resolve conflicts.
• Willingness to work during peak hours, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
• Effectively delegate responsibilities and maximise resources.
• Ability to walk, stand, and occasionally carry heavy items in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
• High level of discretion and trustworthiness.
• Keen to explore new ideas and initiatives in relation to refreshing the club atmosphere.
