Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Guidance Delivery Adviser. You will develop your career opportunities and experience in areas such as project management, content creation, market research and user testing through advising on the delivery of Historic England written guidance to aid good practice and culture change. You will provide strategic internal support to a fascinating range of subject specialists and experts. Your work will enable the effective development and delivery of accessible and inclusive guidance. You will make a difference to the ways Historic England supports the work of the sector.

The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home - Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth and Cambridge.

What you will be doing

Your main duties will be as follows:-

To liaise with Historic England colleagues and engage with the audience for Historic England’s published guidance. Typically this is a mix of web pages or stand-alone .pdf publications. You will research, develop and implement the most effective way for Historic England to make expert guidance available.

To contribute to the wider work of the Sector Resilience and Skills team in advising on knowledge sharing approaches and performance support tools (e.g. workplace placements, guidance, training, workshops, webinars, etc.) to most effectively build sector capacity and capability. Specifically in 2024-25, you will support the launch and embedding in practice of a Knowledge Sharing Toolkit for use by Historic England and commissioned external projects.

To oversee and, where appropriate, manage projects, or provide the Project Assurance role, to apply the established guidance development process so that Historic England’s teams can deliver guidance effectively and make the specialist knowledge of Historic England available in an efficient and effective way.

To take strategic oversight of reporting of key performance indicators for Historic England’s published guidance in all formats.

To have a strategic overview of the guidance produced by the heritage sector, contribute to relevant sector networks, and to assist the co-alignment of our guidance production with that of the sector. This will maximise the impact of the sector’s resources to produce the guidance that the sector needs effectively and efficiently. Specifically in 2024-25, this will focus on updating Historic England’s awareness of sector guidance production, working with the member organisations that make up the Historic Environment Forum.

Act as a liaison with colleagues across Historic England, for example the Marketing and Content teams, to ensure guidance delivery is undertaken within the broader context of audience and website research and development, branding, accessibility and tone of voice.

Updating and editing relevant existing webpages used to publish our guidance, using the content management system and where relevant e‑Learning system, so that guidance is up to date, reflects current thinking and is accessible.

Where necessary, work flexibly to cover relevant work in Sector Resilience and Skills in reply to changing national organisational priorities.

Who we are looking for

Experience of writing, or coordinating the production of, written advice and guidance

Experience in project delivery

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Able to influence, encourage and assist others to contribute to projects and activities.

Good knowledge of how the historic environment is managed
