Summary

The Deputy Director, Central Digital is a crucial role within the Digital Directorate, which is responsible for defining the strategy for digital innovation and transformation for the MoJ. This role leads the transformation ambition work that was sponsored and prioritised by the Executive Committee and the Permanent Secretary to guide our digital strategic ambition for the next Spending Review period.

The role involves leading a set of discoveries, accelerators and products, made up of multidisciplinary teams (across digital, operations and policy) to explore opportunities for productivity and efficiency improvements, while maintaining a view on delivering on user needs and improving the services that we provide as a department.

Beyond challenging the level of digital ambition for the department, the Head of Central Digital also manages a team of 73 digital specialists, including a group of Heads of Profession, who are senior digital specialists, responsible for the professional development of c. 1000 digital civil servants across Justice Digital.

As a Head of Central Digital, the post holder is responsible for leading the digital strand of the Digital Justice System work, working closely with director and deputy director level colleagues in the Policy directorate, and the Policy Director General themselves. The role is accountable for ensuring that people with disputes/ legal problems get the right resolution at the right time and in the right way, by enabling the realisation of the Master of the Rolls’ vision of a Digital Justice System. They lead the exploration, technical design, and prototyping of concepts across civil, family and tribunal jurisdictions.

As Deputy Director, Central Digital, you will:

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team of 73, including matrix management brought on by the responsibility for managing a group of Heads of Profession who are highly specialised digital leaders in the Government Digital and Data professions.
• Hold accountability for the performance and results of the Central Digital Team, as well as the Transformation Ambition team, who span a number of visible projects across MoJ, such as the Launchpad accelerator and the Subject Access Requests automation and simplification accelerator.
• Hold responsibility for the day-to-day running of Central Digital to ensure that it is a high performing team and able to meet its strategic objectives, within the allocated budget of £10m.
• Lead Executive Committee conversations regarding the ambition for digital transformation of the department, with implications beyond 2030, act as the decision-maker on the day-to-day products and performance, while also advising the CDIO and Director of Digital.
• Be responsible for influencing a range of senior stakeholders across the wider MOJ landscape, including functional heads, policy directors and operational delivery leaders, to shape an ambition vision for service delivery and secure buy in for the deliverables (e.g., impact on the future of legal aid, influencing simplification of policy that delivers operational productivity, securing funding for future transformation).
