Summary


We have a fantastic and rare opening for a Band 3 Senior Therapy Assistant working on our Acute Neuro/stroke, and medical ward. We are looking to appoint a passionate, motivated, and proactive Band 3 Senior Therapy Assistant to work on the Stroke/ Neuro and medical wards. You will be working in a fast-paced environment; ensuring patients improve their functional outcomes and are discharged from hospital to the right place at the right time. You will be supporting patients with Upper limb rehab, cognitive assessments, functional assessments as well as exercise programmes and mobility. Prescribing equipment to facilitate safe discharges. Making informed decisions and formulating safe and effective discharge plans in conjunction with the ward Therapists. Working autonomously with own independent caseload. Communicating with all health care professional involved in the patients care at the time. Assisting on visits to patients homes to assess their discharge needs. High standard documentation and clinical reasoning within the patients notes. Report writing and onward referral with Occupational therapist and physiotherapist support. The department prides itself on its quality supervision and support. The successful applicant will be able to work across weekends and extended hours at times. Flexible working patterns can be discussed on an individual basis at interview.

To undertake skilled support work to assist the Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in

the treatment and recovery, rehabilitation and ultimately

Discharge of patients. To provide therapy interventions to the patients of Bedford hospital.

To be responsible for the implementation of patient functional assessments and rehabilitation

for a defined client group.

The senior assistant will assess and if appropriate implement activities, treatment and

exercises, liaise with families and the MDT in order to achieve the common goal of facilitating a

safe and effective discharge. The Senior assistant will monitor, adjust treatment/interventions

and review patients on an ongoing basis. There will be administration duties within the

department. To treat all patients according to set treatment protocols, monitor progression

and make alterations as required within agreed parameters. To develop and maintain

competencies through continuing professional development (CPD)

To implement patient treatment working within established guidelines for defined client group. The Technician will assess and if appropriate implement activities, treatment and exercises in order to achieve the common goal of facilitating a safe and effective discharge.

The senior assistant will order, deliver and fit Millbrook equipment.

Independently monitor adjust and review intervention and treatments

There will be administration duties within the department

You will be on a weekend rota and provide therapy services to the acute setting on additional hours when required.

To be responsible for your own time management and communicate effectively with others departments to ensure patients receive a holistic treatment package.

To implement treatment and rehabilitation goals of patients in close co-operation with the multi-disciplinary team and the client.

To carry out initial interviews and complete data bases independently, identifying goals needed in order to maintain or improve function, and facilitate a safe and efficient discharge.

To liaise with families and external agencies in order to progress discharge.

To have difficult conversations or communications with both relatives, patients and external agencies. To achieve a therapeutic relationship with clients and the multi-disciplinary team and encourage patient participation.

To be responsible for patients whilst in the department/gym/ward.

To monitor patients progress and be responsible for decision making to progress the patient and their discharge and report back to the Therapist if necessary. Identifying own limitations of knowledge.

To work in other areas if the workload demands/capacity staffing demands if requested the OT or PT manager.

Attend, participate, and in the absence of a therapist lead, the therapy relevant information during MDT handover/meetings.

To use information gathered from ward meetings and other team members to prioritise workload and where necessary, allocate to other team members when the Therapist are not present.

To give patients instruction, direction, guidance and education on treatments, exercises, manual handling and positioning, to monitor, review and adjust the treatments when necessary.

To report all relevant information to the therapist.

To identify and refer to appropriate external agencies for signposting in order to address long term needs. Such as red-cross referral, one call referrals for community assessments (not exhaustive list)

To attend and participate in team meetings.

To attend ward meetings as appropriate ensuring information gathered regarding patient’s discharge is actioned upon.

To prioritise the needs of the patients on a day-to-day basis and adjust the delivery of treatment programme as appropriate.

To ensure all equipment is maintained in a safe, proper and clean condition, reporting to the appropriate professional if required.

To select the appropriate therapeutic media in order to achieve the set goals. Taking into account the patients current level of function and medical conditions that may contraindicate treatment.

To undertake any job when necessary as designated by the team leaders or the OT and PT Manager.

To keep up-to date records, inputting on trust electronic systems including extramed and Millbrook for example in line with trust standards, hospital policies and procedures, from the guidance of CSP COT standards.

To assist as directed by an Occupational Therapist on home visits.

To independently carry out access visits to ascertain requirements for discharge and if appropriate action those requirements.

To be able to independently identify and order equipment from the current electronic ordering system.

To be able to deliver, fit or collect equipment.

To monitor maintenance of equipment and ensure equipment is safe prior to provision. In accordance with the procedure in place at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust

To undertake admin duties when required.

To be on the weekend rota as additional hours once in post for 6 months or until deemed competent by the supervising senior.

To develop and maintain effective communication on professional/Trust issues.

To utilise communication networks with external agencies, wards and staff to provide an optimum service for the client.

To liaise regularly with the Therapists on the demands of the caseload.

To accept and undertake work in a willing manner and put time to effective use.

To make it known to the OT and or PT Manager if the volume/nature of work becomes excessive or detrimental to performance.

To attend staff meetings and participate in these.

To attend all departmental meetings/in-service opportunities and mandated supervision in order to be compliant with the trust requirements and legal requirements of the post

To comply with the mandatory yearly ADPR

To comply with and be responsible for mandatory training throughout the year to ensure compliance
