Summary

The role
We are currently looking to appoint a Waste Operative to join the Operations Service. The main duties of this role will be to support the collection of waste and recycling materials within the Borough

Qualifications
Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent
Category C, C1 or B Driving Licence or equivalent, desirable
Hold a valid Driver Qualification card (DQC), desirable


Duties and responsibilities
­- Assist in the delivery of the waste and recycling collection service, including
• Collect waste, recycling and other materials in containers, load waste and return containers to the agreed return point.
• Inspect, and where necessary reject, recycling or refuse containers in line with council policies, including labelling of rejected bins as appropriate.
• Help keep the environment clean by removing all deposited waste on streets and promptly reporting items which cannot be physically moved by the team.
• Deliver receptacles, information leaflets and letters as well as attaching information stickers to containers as and when required.
­- Take responsibility for the Health and Safety of yourself and others; including carrying out all duties with regard to council procedures and risk assessments, reporting all incidents as soon as possible and ensuring you are wearing the required PPE
­- Assist the Driver / Team Leader during the shift with daily driver checks, daily work tickets (including familiarisation with collection routes, assisted collection lists etc.), assisting in safe manoeuvring of vehicles especially when reversing and maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle.
­- Assist with on the job training of any new or temporary employee after their initial induction.
­- Have a professional attitude and act as an ambassador for the Council when carrying out your day to day duties. If required
• You will provide assistance and advice to members of the public including sign posting to council services.
• To discuss and resolve any customer issues on a face to face basis and escalate to a line manager if unable to do so.
­- Be committed to completing the allocated daily tasks and getting the job done right first time.
­- Be flexible in order to deliver other activities within the service area as required e.g. street sweeping, litter picking, clearing fly-tipped waste etc and any other reasonable instructions by your supervisor/manager
­- Assist with any other functions of the Operations Team as required including grounds maintenance, cemeteries work and town centre cleansing. Duties will be carried out for the jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the competence of the employee.

Person Specification
­- Experience of delivering services and working to deadlines
­- Experience of waste or recycling collections, street sweeping or other operational activities would be advantageous
­- Have good literacy, numeracy and communications skills and be able to follow instructions
­- Ability to use mobile electronic devices such as tablets
­- Have good problem solving and decision making skills
­- Committed to achieving daily targets and getting the job done right first time
­- Ability to deal with customers in a polite, professional and friendly manner
­- Ability to identify different types of waste and segregate accordingly
­- To be a willing team member but also the ability to work on own
­- Be flexible and willing to work across the various activities undertaken by the section
­- Ability to work in an outdoor environment in all-weather conditions and undertake work of a physical nature
­- Ability to work overtime on Bank Holidays and weekends as required
­- To take personal responsibility for your own Health & Safety, other colleagues and members of the public
­- Ability and willingness to demonstrate the council’s values and behaviours
