Summary


We are looking to appoint a full time Medical Laboratory Assistantin the Neuropathology Department at Southmead Hospital on a permanent basis.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, adaptable individuals who would enjoy working as part of a friendly team in this busydepartment.

The ideal candidate will be organised, keen to learn and reliable. They must be able to work effectively as part of a small team, as well as being able to work independently. Excellent communication skills arerequiredand the candidate must have attention to detail.

The Neuropathology departmentis located inpurpose-built laboratories at Southmead Hospital and processes neuropathological specimens from surgical patients or autopsies. It is currently accredited to ISO 15189





You will be involved in the day-to-day support work of the Neuropathology laboratory, including data-entry, specimen receipt and booking in of specimens. You will be assisting cut-up. You will also be carrying out the processing and staining for CSF samples.

You will be required to be involved with equipment and reagent maintenance and be involved with departmental filing systems. In addition you may also be required to cut specimens using the microtome and with appropriate training.
• All members of North Bristol NHS Trust’s staff are required to participate in the Trust’s annual staff appraisal process.
• A number of work activities involve the handling of moderate loads or continual repetitive movements for considerable periods during each working day.
• A high level of concentration is required to ensure that departmental procedures are followed.
• The post-holder may be exposed to a range of pathological specimens received by the department on a daily basis, including:
- Both fresh and formalin-fixed samples of tissue biopsied during surgery
- Formalin-fixed brains and spinal cords removed during autopsy
• There is regular handing of hazardous chemicals under controlled conditions and of pathological specimens under appropriate levels of containment.
• There is a requirement to wear protective clothing and apparatus. In addition to wearing laboratory coats, protective latex/nitrile gloves are used regularly. Goggles, face-masks, etc. are also used as and when appropriate.

For this Medical Laboratory Assistant post, you will need to be passionate about working in healthcare, numerate and literate (with a minimum 4 GCSEs including English, Maths and a Science), be able to work as part of a team, be able to demonstrate adaptability and initiative and have good communication and organisational skills. This is not a training position and a degree level of education is not required for this post.

Applicants are required to have good keyboard skills and a working knowledge of the pathology IT systems, although full training will be provided. Ideally we are looking for someone with data-entry skills and recent laboratory experience.
