Summary
We are looking for an Acute Oncology Nurse who is compassionate, accountable with the experience and skills support staff in our oncology unit in providing a high standard of care n the best interests of our cancer patients. We are looking to open an Acute Oncology Unit to provide a dedicated area outside of ED for patients to receive treatment to improve the patient experience and reduce the risk of cancer patients being exposed to a busy ED waiting room.

The overall purpose of this role is working in conjunction with the CNS and oncologist to provide a high-quality specialist nursing service for patient diagnosed with cancer. The post holder will be expected to work as part of the Acute oncology team in providing specialist oncology advice/care for those with a cancer diagnoses currently on chemotherapy/immunotherapy treatment or patient who have completed treatment within the last 6 weeks who present to our emergency department or contacted the Acute oncology team via the telephone triage service.
You will be expected to work under the guidance and direction of the Acute Oncology CNS to ensure all patients presenting with an oncological emergency is managed in line with the agreed pathways as required to meet the needs of the person, this will include ensuring the persons privacy and dignity is maintained throughout there care and treatment.
Work in collaboration with the MDT to ensure this group of patients are treated effectively and timely through the agreed pathway, you will therefor be expected to undertake a nursing assessment, observations and any investigations as outlined in the agreed pathways. You will be expected to support with the assessment of patients nursing needs, carry out investigations and deliver treatments, ensuring safe management and appropriate referral or discharge.

• The post holder will provide direct, specialised care and advice to patients within the oncology service, using specialist nursing skills to assess each patient and ensuring that care and support to patients is sensitive to their needs
• To act as a patients’ advocate and to give advice regarding treatment options in order that patients can give informed consent
• To work in collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team including emergency care practitioners, general physicians and surgeons, haematologists/oncologists and specialist nurses in order to ensure the provision of a high-quality service for patient.
• To ensure patients are seen within 30 minutes of arriving within the unit
• Interpret, analyse and respond to test results whilst ensuring patient’s safety
• To undertake a nursing assessment of the unwell patient with a cancer complication as outlined in the service operating inclusion criteria and ensure they are managed within agreed protocols/pathways
• To give specialist expert up to date advice for care and maintenance of PICC, Port-a-cath and any other CVAC devices used within the Trust
• To liaise with the AOS oncologist/registrar of the day on any issues arising from new referrals, new assessments
• Promote and maintain effective communication with the patient and their carer(s)
• Use communication skills in order to convey complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
• Ensure that patient documentation is completed correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner.
• Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained.
• Ensure the assessment unit is stocked, clean and tidy according to the trust IPC guidance.
• Ensure timely information is disseminated within the appropriate teams to ensure a safe effective level of care is delivered outside of the emergency department.
