Summary

Key Responsibilities Technical As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, to ensure that clinical and research imaging is undertaken in an efficient, safe and timely manner ensuring that a high level of patient care is provided before, during and after imaging procedures To support Superintendent Radiographer and deputy for the training and supervision of radiographers/technologists in all aspects for the assigned clinical and research imaging. In conjunction with other professional groups to prepare, develop and monitor clinical imaging protocols and to ensure that study design is optimized for individual patients. To be responsible for auditing and maintaining the highest standards of image quality prior to distribution to referring clinicians To work as audit lead for the imaging aspects of the department ensuring compliance with Regulatory and Accreditation bodies advise To lead on SOP updating for clinical and research imaging, ensuring the actual protocol are consistent with the agreed procedures. Administrative In the absence of the Superintendent Radiographer/deputy to be responsible for the day to day operation of the PET Centre, including responsibility for personnel and administration functions. To maintain up-to-date, accurate and comprehensive records of patient data, and to ensure that appropriate departmental records are kept. To be responsible for the ordering of consumables and general supplies for the department at all sites as a whole and ensure appropriate records and cost effectiveness is managed. To ensure that the operational environment of the Centre on cross sites is maintained in good order and that an excellent level of patient care is achieved. To be aware of and comply with Health & Safety, Radiation protection, Dept. of Environment and Transport and Data Protection regulations ensuring that written local rules remain current and that all staff are conversant with these. Keep track of the update on SOPs and Protocols ensuring consistency with the actual practice Timely report and investigate incidents happened in the PET-Centre with the available system ensuring proper root causes are identified Collaborate with Service Manager and Governance lead to ensure lessons learned from incidents are disseminated and properly mitigated Organisational responsibility To support the superintendent radiographer/deputy in maintaining an overview of the total PET -CT scanning process from radiotracer production through to generation of monthly contract activity reports To coordinate and lead a structured response to equipment or radiotracer production failures, including complex re-scheduling of patient or research scans. To make timely and effective decisions based on radiotracer and scanner availability to ensure that the most efficient use of resources is achieved and the least number of patients / research subjects are inconvenienced or re-scheduled Timely scheduling of patient scans to ensure compliance to Cancer waiting times To report accidents, incidents to the Superintendent Radiographer or to appropriate person. To enter those incidents on the relevant Incident Reporting System. Facilities & Equipment Maintenance To deal effectively and in a timely manner with any unplanned equipment failures or damage to the building fabric To ensure that internal works staff and external contractors are sensitive to patient needs whilst working in the Centre Research & Development To input and work closely with others into the development of research protocols, documentation and related procedures. To coordinate research scans including scheduling, completing relevant documentation and collecting relevant data for invoicing for individual scans as per departmental practice. To closely liaise with Clinical Scientists and researchers to ensure relevant resources are available for complex scans. Collaborate with Imaging Team and other professional groups to prepare scientific abstract for National and International Conferences. Clinical Responsibilities To have regular contact with PET Centre clinicians to ensure efficient workflow patterns are achieved within the Centre To produce and promote images of the highest technical quality as befits a high profile department/hospital, adapting and tailoring the examination to the needs of the patient, whilst keeping the radiation dose as low as reasonably practicable. To have regular contact with referring clinicians in person and by phone to advise on uses of PET, discuss individual referrals, facilitate scheduling of urgent referrals and non-routine or complex bookings e.g. cases requiring General Anaesthetic. To have regular contact with patients - face to face, by telephone and written communication. To deal with non-routine/complex enquiries from patients concerning issues affecting the scheduling of scans or the PET scanning procedure which cannot be deal with by administrative staff. To notify patients of equipment or production failures which may result in their PET scan being cancelled postponed or delayed. To assist and/or deal with formal complaints from patients and patients relatives When necessary discuss requests with clinicians to ensure the most appropriate investigation is carried out and data logged on CRIS. To use specialist knowledge to advise patients, carers and other staff members on radiation protection matters associated with examinations. To recognise and report abnormal scan findings that may require urgent clinical intervention to a Radiologist or other suitable member of the clinical team. Additional requirements, occasional duties and responsibilities: To undertake other tasks and responsibilities as necessary, appropriate to the position including working flexible hours. Operational hours are presently between 7am and 7pm Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday work. Participation, as appropriate, in the KCL Appraisal and Development Scheme; this may include taking responsibility for the development of other staff as well as responsibility for personal development. To be prepared to give educational talks and seminars about PET imaging to groups within the Centre and related hospital departments or KCL school. To assist in the production and preparation of image data to the highest possible standards in preparation for publication and presentations At all times staff must work within the policy guidelines set by the College and Guys and St Thomas Trust.
