What is the Role?

As part of SSEN Transmission Pathway to 2030 programme of works, we are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our UVDC Project Engineering team to help drive forward our projects and who can bring big ideas, new skills and innovative thinking to help us grow our teams to successfully deliver a network for Net Zero.

Many of the Pathway to 2030 projects are new HVDC projects which incorporate HVDC cables in both marine and terrestrial environments with interface at landfall locations. This role sits within the HVDC Cable Engineering Team. You'll be assisting in the development and delivery of all the onshore and offshore geotechnical activity associated with design and installation of critical national infrastructure. Youll play a key part in delivering Net Zero.

The role has the following key responsibilities:

- Provide geotechnical support across all aspects of HVDC engineering projects, including DC to AC convertor stations, landfalls, onshore and offshore cable routes. This includes interdisciplinary working alongside various teams, including civil engineers, offshore installation engineers and cable engineers.

- Prepare technical work scopes and specifications for geotechnical activities, inform the Employers geotechnical requirements for ECC contracts and supporting the tender review process as part of the technical team.

- Support project FEED activities such as route and site selection, ground investigation, laboratory testing and engineering feasibility studies.

- Review & accept the contractors engineering & design deliverables; balancing technical risk/benefit to make confident design decisions including site supervision of survey and construction works for compliance with the Employers requirements, legislation, promoting health & safety

- As a key member of Designer and Principal Designer teams, promote the safety-in-design ethos and discharge these CDM duties on behalf of SSE. Identification and management of geotechnical risk. Reduce risk (technical, quality, health, and safety) to the point of elimination or as low as is reasonably practicable. This includes risk identification, assessment, mitigation, communication and record keeping.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- BEng/BSc qualification level in a relevant geotechnical discipline.

- Strong geotechnical background and experience in supporting the full EPC lifecycle of onshore offshore infrastructure projects. Emphasis on ground investigations, earthworks and foundations for capital infrastructure projects would be highly desirable.

- Experience reviewing Contractor engineering and design deliverables, such as ground interpretive reports, earthwork strategies, horizontal directional drilling reports and foundation designs.

- Knowledge and experience in offshore ground investigation, in particular to cable infrastructure with working knowledge of relevant industry standards, specifications, and best practice.

- Work experience and understanding of ECC contracts and CDM regulations; particularly with respect to roles of Supervisor and Principal Designer.
