Summary

CLINICAL

Arrange and co-ordinate the reception, admission, transfer and nurse led discharge of patients

Provide clinical leadership and support to the junior team working in procedure rooms, assessment of incoming patients and nurse led recovery and discharge in accordance with local and national guidance provided.

Working closely with the medical team and support the management of inpatient procedures.

PROFESSIONAL

Develop professionally through self development – extending own knowledge through the NMC’s code of professional conduct and participate in research and learning projects ongoing in the department, disseminating information to junior staff

Offer professional co-operation to medical / support staff in solving care related problems and carry out treatment as instructed to deliver quality care.

Participate and promote the change process to meet future needs of the service, keeping up to date with local and national agendas. Assistance with JAG compliance.

Assist in the implementation of procedure for complaints from relatives, patients and staff and inform the line manager of any untoward incidents and participate in the clinical incident reporting process.

Take an active role in staff development by undertaking PDR for junior staff and supporting new starters to the department.

CLINICAL


1. Arrange and co-ordinate the reception, admission, transfer and nurse led discharge of patients
2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care within specialism
3. Act as named/room/recovery nurse in the endoscopy unit providing a

senior level of skill proficiency for competent assistance during a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic and complex endoscopic procedures.
1. Assist in the decontamination process of endoscopes ensuring infection control measures are adhered to, keeping abreast of current changes in practice to minimise the risks to both patients and staff
2. Establish a safe working environment for patients and staff .and ensure patient dignity is compromised as little as possible
3. Maintain the appropriate documentation – e.g. care pathway documents, brief /debrief documents and electronic records.
4. Assist in the investigation of all incidents, accidents to all patients, visitors or staff and implement the clinical incident reporting process.
5. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of endoscopic and specialist equipment, the function and application of all endoscopes and systems, potential malfunctions and hazards of endoscopic equipment / substances and corrective action
6. Take responsibility for a group of patients and act as team leader where appropriate, co-ordinating the utilisation of staff/ operating lists. Co-ordinate and participate in safe transfer and positioning of patients
7. Assist and coordinate in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards
8. Ensure the safe removal of clinical waste and contaminated items including blood products/ body fluids to relevant areas.
9. Send equipment for repair with appropriate documentation
10. Undertake daily checks of theatre equipment and report any faults to relevant dept or person
11. Prepare and arrange transportation of equipment to other hospitals
12. Organise loan equipment
13. Ensure equipment is available prior to start of list
14. Check equipment into dept from external companies/hospitals
15. Perform intravenous cannulation and Venepuncture and dispatch specimens to pathology
16. Clinically support the prioritisation of endoscopy emergency capacity and demand.

PROFESSIONAL

2. Participate in the implementation of clinical practice that is carried out in accordance to Trust and Departmental policies / procedures / standards / guidelines and protocols, providing support to senior personnel.
3. Offer professional co-operation to medical / support staff in solving care related problems and carry out treatment as instructed to deliver quality care.
4. Participate and promote the change process to meet future needs of the service, keeping up to date with local and national agendas. Assistance with JAG compliancy.
5. Maintain stock levels of all clinical equipment and supplies and order as necessary.
6. Assist in the implementation of procedure for complaints from relatives, patients and staff and inform the line manager of any untoward incidents and participate in the clinical incident reporting process.
7. Delegate responsibilities for the delivery of patient care to all junior members of staff. Take an active role in staff development by undertaking PDR for junior staff and supporting new starters to the department.
8. To act as team leader and point of contact for the team.
9. Actively contribute to the budgetary control of the department.
10. Participate in internal rotation within the unit assisting other areas according to need and personal competency.
11. Promote integration of staff within the unit.
12. Develop a special interest within the unit and be responsible for this area e.g. risk assessment, Governance, JAG.
13. Participate and promote policy service development
14. Play a leading role in undertaking and presenting audit information to a wide range of stakeholder. Participate in clinical trials as required
15. Ensure daily checks of equipment are carried out, and report faults to helpdesk
16. Provide guidance and support to junior members of staff
17. Participate in raising the awareness, of patients attending the endoscopy unit, of health promotion issues and the actions that can be taken to address issues, both general and specific to procedure carried out / diagnosis.
