A Museum Curator is required to be responsible for the day-to-day care and documentation of museum service collections and to support the vision of the museum service through active involvement in the exhibition, activities, events and outreach programmes as well as the care of collections. To assist in the museum maintaining its Accreditation and support the audience engagement activities of the museum service. The post holder may need to work unsociable hours including weekends, evenings and Bank Holidays.

Key responsibilities:

Work as part of the Museum Team in carrying out the strategic plans for the service.
Provide the day-to-day management of the museum collections in order to achieve service and council objectives.
Document museum collections using written and computerised systems as appropriate, utilising photography to meet spectrum standards and in line with accreditation.
Ensure the care of the collections through pursuing a preventative conservation programme including environmental control and monitoring, housekeeping, integrated pest management and control of storage areas in order to raise standards.
Carry out a programme of retrospective documentation to increase access to the collection and to meet the council’s obligations,
Maintain the collections in line with external standards e.g. Accreditation, Benchmarks in Collections Care.
Assess the conservation needs of the collections and source remedial treatment where appropriate.
Drive improvements in collections care through project work where appropriate.
Supervise volunteers and contractors working with collections and/or in collection storage areas. To recruit, supervise and organise the volunteers in relation to collections work to ensure safe working practices and the smooth efficient working of the service.
Work with other members of the team where appropriate to ensure appropriate levels of collections care are maintained whilst items are in use for exhibitions, activities or outreach purposes.

Qualifications:

Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (History, Archaeology, Anthropology, or Art History).
Postgraduate Qualification in Museum Studies desirable.



Experience:

Experience of working in a museum/gallery.
Experience of caring for a range of museum collections including environmental monitoring, cleaning, stores work and pest monitoring.
Experience of documenting museum collections using both paper and computerised systems to include both current and retrospective documentation.
Experience of working with people of all ages and a variety of backgrounds.
Experience of working on exhibitions, events or on outreach projects.
Experience of dealing with object and history-based enquiries.
Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.



Knowledge:

Good standard of knowledge and experience of collections work including relevant standards.
Working knowledge of computerised documentation systems.
Knowledge of social history.
Good knowledge of preventative conservation techniques.



Skills & Abilities:

Good organisational skills.
It literate able to use Microsoft Office, Excel and use of collections databases.
Good interpersonal oral and written communication skills, numerate.
Ability to collect performance management information.
Ability to contribute to the creation of policies and standards.
Able to give handling sessions, talks and or other presentations to a range of groups.
Able to prioritise work to achieve results.
Able to work both as an individual and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Enthusiasm for making collections available to the wider community.
Willingness to experiment and test new ideas.
Able to lift, hold and carry objects other display materials. Able to work at height when installing exhibitions. Able to work in confined spaces. Please note that the manual handling work is a regular part of the work.
Full driving licence desirable.
Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
