Summary

This is not an exhaustive list of duties and a regular review will take place with the postholder as part of their ongoing development and performance management. To be competent in the dispensing of all prescription types, orders including controlled drugs. To work autonomously in the final accuracy check of medication or be willing to work towards the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification. To accurately order clinically checked medicines for ward administration. To identify and escalate any issues regarding medication storage, patient own medication, supplies, or drug chart discrepancies to the ward pharmacist To participate in the development of the ward service and ward initiatives such as ward based prescribing To offer support to the Lead medicines management pharmacist/ Lead Technician when needed. To participate in the dispensing of controlled drugs and the maintenance of their stock levels and records. To ensure medicines are stored and locked away as per Trust policy on the ward To follow trust policies regarding reporting and monitoring of fridge temperatures and deviations. To audit and support the safe and secure handling of medicines and controlled drugs at ward level, preparing and managing action plans and report finding. To lead on ward audits such as missed dose and medicines reconciliation audits. To counsel patients and carers on their medication during their in-patient stay and on discharge. To return, assess and credit drugs from wards that are no longer required following Pharmacy returns policy. To support in investigating incidents related to medicines management across the Trust and to appropriately respond to any complaints To assess drug charts and record messages on the trust prescribing system (PICS). Investigate stock discrepancies within department including controlled drugs as per Trust policy To undertake and support the lead technician in all general duties of the dispensary and deputise when required. To ensure that disposal of pharmaceuticals including controlled drugs is in accordance with regulations. To participate in Recall Procedure and follow SOPs. To supervise and mentor other Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs), students, technicians, and new members of staff. The following sections have been added to expand and support above duties and responsibilities General To contribute to the training and education of pharmacy and ward staff. To achieve objectives agreed at individual Performance Review with the line manager. To participate in working late nights, weekends, and bank holidays, in line with service commitments. To demonstrate an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development (CPD). To work efficiently and safely both on wards and in the department always adhering accurately to Standard Operating Procedures and policies underpinned by Trust Values. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required as agreed by senior staff. To assist in the reduction of medicines errors and to be pro-active at reporting via governance systems. To follow pharmacy SOPs in place for the delivery of service on the wards. To support in developing and amending standard operating procedures. To attend meetings with a variety of health care professionals, drug companies and hospital staff to participate in the initiation of new systems.
