Summary

To perform appropriate technical laboratory procedures and tasks that are consistent with the job holders levels of knowledge, skills and experience. These tasks may vary from day to day but examples would include: oCollecting, receiving, sorting , distribution, disposal and administration of diagnostic samples & documentation oBasic recognition of samples/tissues (eg. Blood / urine etc) oPreparation of samples prior to processing oPreparation of chemical reagents and simple set up of testing platforms oProcessing & testing of certain clinical samples as per standard operating procedures oRejecting samples based on defined criteria oSafe disposal of clinical / laboratory waste oEnsuring safe storage of samples Performs quality control in accordance with the requirements of standard operating procedures Seeks advice if test results are outside acceptable limits defined in QMS documentation Use of LIMS to report, retrieve and manage technical information Records results in accordance with SOPs To respond to telephone enquiries from users of the service in a manner that is in accordance with departmental procedures and to identify and instigate primary actions (within sphere of capability) required including appropriate reporting and escalation Co-ordinates effective instrument management within service area To assist in the day to day monitoring, cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures within scope of practice Performs standard maintenance checks prior to testing and suggests remedial action to basic problems This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small tools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of clinical material or when preparing microscope slides for examination by others. In order to achieve the required turnaround times the work must be performed with both speed and accuracy. Leadership & Management Objectives To supervise support workers when and as required. To demonstrate relevant job related tasks to new or more junior staff Maintain own competence in established procedures and participate in relevant training where required. Actively supports and encourages individual and team development To contribute to general departmental management by assisting in the ordering, receipt and control of consumables and stock levels To work independently when and as directed by section lead/supervisor. To manage own workload and that within area and sphere of capability, escalating issues appropriately. Supports waste reduction and continuous improvement incentives for designated area Supports collaborative team working across all sections. Quality Objectives Contributes to the maintenance of quality management systems within scope of practice and suggests updates to quality and training documents, where appropriate. Supports with audit queries. Contributes to H&S compliance making recommendations seeking advice if outside of level of responsibility Performs quality control in accordance with requirements of the QMS Takes proactive steps to ensure that turnaround time targets are met within scope of practice Assures the quality of own work by monitoring against relevant quality indicators and able to identify where work has deviated from relevant quality indicators Participates in the collation of service user/stakeholder feedback Reports incidents using Datix Support in attaining and maintaining compliance with key performance indicators. This includes supporting in the monitoring and performance of IQC and EQA Demonstrates personal responsibility and accountability for quality of work by identifying and monitoring against relevant quality factors Supporting with research, development and evaluation of new methods/instruments/tests, including verification of new technologies/tests in specialist area Supports with identification of service improvement opportunities and implementation of improvement actions Assists in the delivery of continuous improvement/development plans for specialist area Other Other duties as commensurate with the grade and role as agreed with line manager.
