We are recruiting for a senior healthcare support worker to join the occupational therapy department in a 3-year fixed term contract working as a band 3 occupational therapy apprentice.

Apprenticeships are proving to be popular and successful ‘learn while you earn’ route to becoming a registered occupational therapist and we are looking to offer this exciting opportunity to our current employees.

The occupational therapy apprenticeship role will support the occupational therapy service in its’ provision of assessment and treatment intervention of patients on our older adult rehab ward, Beaconsfield East.

The successful applicant will be required to also be successful with their university interview / gaining University of Hertfordshire offer for entry into Sept 2024 co-hort of OT apprenticeship.

On successful completion of the training, apprentices will gain a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy you will be offered an interview for employment with the trust within the band 5 occupational therapy rotation.

The apprentice role will provide a targeted pathway to gain the required skills, knowledge, and competency to complete the degree level programme and qualify as an Occupational Therapist.

The successful candidate will work 4 days as an Occupational Therapy Assistant at Hillingdon Hospital and attend lectures / session at the University of Hertfordshire one day a week. While at work, you will be based on the Older Adult Rehabilitation Unit where you will complete Occupational Therapy Assistant tasks, including assessing, treating and discharging of patients from the hospital.

You will be supported by senior OTs and Physiotherapists, while working within an established MDT. The role will include assisting, work alongside and carry out delegated treatments, interventions and functional assessment both individually and in groups.

The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of OT within an acute setting as well as other areas of practice and have experience working in healthcare. As this is an apprenticeship role you will need to have completed some formal training within the last 5 years and meet the Universities criteria to gain entry onto the course. During the 3 year degree you will be required to attend placements in different settings.

The apprenticeship role will enable you to work towards a professional registration with HCPC and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers. At the end of the programme, the individual will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes, and behaviours relevant to employment as an AHP and will work to a nationally recognised HCPC code of conduct.

The overall outcome from the on the job training and the university training programme is an AHP who is fit to practice in the widest range of settings.

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust’s services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.
