Summary

Hours: 5pm-9pm Monday-Friday

The role:

As Shift Support Assistant you will be undertaking key working activities such as referrals, interviews and booking in clients, including housing management activities such as finances, resettlement and health and hygiene. You will also assist our clients to develop and care for themselves by providing advice and guidance on personal care and relevant life skills. You will help to prepare and serve the evening meal and assist in the cleaning and clearing of the kitchen with the assistance of our clients.


Main responsibilities:

1. To ensure a high standard of health, safety and security at CENS. (This will
include dealing with clinical waste)

2. To create and maintain a calm and settled environment at the project during the evening and overnight and responding to emergencies as required.

3. To maintain high standards in relation to Safeguarding and establishing empathic, positive and trusting professional relationships with clients whilst respecting boundaries.

4. To encourage and enable individuals to recognise, accept and successfully cope with the responsibilities which living at CENS entails, particularly involving the terms of their Licence Agreement.

5. To take personal responsibility for own Health, Safety and Welfare and that of colleagues and
volunteers in the workplace.

6. Understand, implement and comply with all of CENS’s policies and procedures
and to lead by example and provide any other support to assist in the smooth running of the project.



Key Tasks:

Security & Housing management:
1. Carrying out all relevant Health and Safety and Fire Safety checks at specified periodic intervals.
2. Monitor communal and staff first aid kits
3. Monitor and maintain the security of the building, assisting all clients in developing appropriate boundaries with fellow service users and volunteers.
4. Monitor and maintain an appropriate banned person list, liaising with other agencies as required.
5. Inspect, risk assess and clean and clear void bed spaces, reporting damage if appropriate.
6. Ensure completion of Housing Benefit e-claims and that appropriate evidence is collected and submitted if required.
7. Monitor individual clients’ rent accounts, collect payments and complete relevant paperwork to ensure financial transparency and take action to reduce arrears.

Support:

1. Conduct full risk assessments on new clients and induct new people completing full admission pack.
2. Assist with client support and gather information on past housing, support needs, education, work history etc to help formulate support plans.
3. Promote resident involvement at local and service level.
4. Inputting into databases and spreadsheets and keeping records and any other administrative
duties as required
5. Work as part of a team providing appropriate support on a flexible basis. Liaising with other Support Workers to ensure that client cases are progressing within the agreed time scale.
6. Attend and contribute to monthly staff meetings and act on decisions agreed there, and attend
regular supervision with the Manager.
7. Duties will be subject to review and may be amended according to the needs of the developing service.

A satisfactory DBS check will be required.

An understanding of and commitment to Safeguarding and promoting the health and wellbeing of homeless people is a prerequisite to this role.

Experience:
Experience of working with people in a supportive environment. (D)
Experience of carrying out Health & Safety checks, including Fire Safety (D)
Experience of carrying out general housing management tasks, including housing benefit applications, service charge account monitoring and void checks.(E)
Ability to react to changing demands within the building and to intervene when required (E)
Awareness of issues facing homeless people, including mental health, alcohol or substance misuse, DWP/Disability and Housing benefits and First Aid. (E)

Qualifications: (The right attitude and experience is more important than formal qualifications)
Educated to GCSE level or equivalent standard with good numeracy, literacy and IT skills.(E)
Educated to ‘A’ Level or equivalent standard (D)
Qualification in Youth Work / NVQ Care / I&G / C&G 3806 / equivalent (D)

Skills:
Good inter-personal and communication skills including good letter/report writing and good recording /filing skills.(E)
Ability to find practical solutions to problems. (E)
Ability to use initiative to form and maintain working relationships with hard-to-reach people. (E)
Ability to focus on the needs of the client, treating each as an individual.(E)
Able to work alone as well as part of a dedicated team, as appropriate.(E)
