About the Placement

The Alpine Zone and the Streamside at RHS Harlow Carr sits at the heart of the site and has inspired visitors for many years.

Throughout this placement you will work within the Garden’s departments and with its teams and individuals to gain knowledge, skills, training and experience of Alpines and Streamside plants in the work-based context to prepare you for professional life in the industry.

As part of our dedicated team, you will spend part of your working week on Streamside and woodland edge working with plants that grow in this unique environment and the other part learning specialist growing techniques along with maintenance tasks to grow alpines all year round. You will also gain experience in the glasshouse by helping to propagate specialist plants.

While you will be asked to complete some guided learning tasks throughout the placement, the programme is very much about practical experience and does not result in a formal qualification.

Your responsibilities would be to:

1. Participate in guided learning tasks, e.g. in the form of plant profiles, skill profiles and project work.

2. Strictly adhere to current college and RHS School of Horticulture (SoH) legislations, policies and procedures, in order to complete the programme.

3. Assist in the day-to-day cultivation and maintenance of the Garden as part of your training and professional development.

4. Attend, complete and pass a diverse range of training activities as part of your work-based training in the Garden, in order to complete the programme.

5. Be actively involved in RHS & AGS shows/events, including supporting committees, judging panels and exhibitors/exhibits, and helping with shows/events build-up as and when required.

6. Guide and support other learners and/or volunteers as and when required.

7. Give excellent customer service and be able assist customers/visitors as and when required.

8. Work as an individual and as part of the Garden team as and when required.

9. Strictly adhere to current RHS and external legislations, such as those concerned with privacy, security, safeguarding, fire, health and safety.

It is compulsory to wear RHS uniform and special Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be able to, with direction, work with a wide range of horticultural tools and equipment in a safe manner.

10. Comply with current RHS guidance on biosecurity and plant health practices in order to minimise the risk posed by quarantine pests and diseases.

11. Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required of you in the post.
