Summary

A Vacancy at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

The haematology and oncology wards at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) are recruiting a senior staff nurse.

We are a dedicated team of compassionate and skilled professionals looking for new members for our senior nursing team. You will bring clinical expertise, leadership experience and a practical understanding of what excellent quality care looks like.

D703 is a purpose-built, 25 bedded, combined adult Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Unit. We specialise in complex stem cell transplants for which we have 7 specialist ventilation rooms. We provide expert care and treatment for patients with malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions, including lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma, as well as sickle cell disease. The patients are supported by a team of expert clinical nurse specialists, a vast multidisciplinary team, and the bone marrow coordination team. As a teaching and learning Foundation Trust, the unit offers education and training via dedicated clinical educators who are based on the unit. We encourage a nurse led focus and offer a wide range of training opportunities to provide our nurses with the knowledge and confidence. We are invested in our nurse’s careers and champion opportunities for career progression, offering developmental opportunities in a wide range of nursing roles.

We are pioneers of ground-breaking new treatments such as CAR-T cell therapy, for which the team won a Recognising Success award, and conduct cancer research.

The successful candidate should have significant experience in a relevant specialism. You will be expected to work the full range of shifts including long days, night shifts, shorter shifts and weekends. The applicant must be able to:
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence based, individualised patient care.
• Carry out planned care for a group of patients without direct supervision.
• Manage patient care according to agreed policies and protocols, taking appropriate action, seeking advice from other members of the multi-disciplinary team as necessary. This will include identification of risk (clinical, health, safety and security).
• Lead the nursing team on a day to day basis under the management and guidance of the ward sister/ charge nurse.
• Assist with bed management and flow, liaising with other departments across the trust.
• Work with the practice education facilitator to provide training on the ward to staff.
• Closely monitor patients’ status, ensuring all relevant observations/patient assessment criteria are accurately recorded and interpreted to ensure appropriate and timely corrective action is taken in accordance with current protocols, e.g. sepsis.
• Undertake, when fully trained and competent, advanced nursing practices relevant to the clinical area including venepuncture, cannulation and the administration of intravenous chemotherapy
