We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Sonographer to join our friendly Ultrasound team.

This role is suitable for candidates with a PG certificate or PG Diploma in Medical Ultrasound and all applicants must have professional registration e.g. HCPC/NMC

We would be interested in hearing from experienced, newly qualified and soon to be qualified Sonographers; we have a supportive preceptorship programme in place to support progress towards autonomous practice.

Candidates will have excellent communication skills and as a minimum have experience in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound. We also support a wide range of clinical practice in general medical, elastography, MSK, vascular and paediatric ultrasound and HyCoSy and are hoping to further extend the scope of practice for our Sonographers.

Professional development is supported and we have already established Advanced Practice Sonographer roles in MSK ultrasound/intervention and vascular ultrasound and are looking to create roles in Head and Neck ultrasound/intervention and Paediatrics.

All development is underpinned by excellent training, support and commitment to delivering exceptional standards of patient care.

The obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound service (early pregnancy assessment, first, second and third trimester scans, fetal medicine and gynaecology) is based in the Women’s Health Department making this a dynamic cohesive unit with good support from both sonographer and multidisciplinary team colleagues.

The general medical service comprises of general, Elastography, small parts, soft tissue lumps and bumps, hernia, vascular, MSK and Paediatric ultrasound examinations, performed by Sonographers and Consultant Radiologists.

We support one stop clinics for gynaecology and Urology and now provide an ultrasound service at our new local CDC at South Walks House in Dorchester.

The ultrasound team is multidisciplinary, hardworking and dedicated with a wide skill mix and years of experience. We are committed to the training and development of our staff including including specialist clinical training, internal training, external courses e.g. BMUS conference and are keen to fund and support staff to MSc level.

We have high specification ultrasound equipment (Philips EPIQ and Canon i700 systems)

The post is based at Dorset County Hospital but you will also be expected to participate in the provision of a community wide ultrasound service across 4 satellite sites.

Participation in weekend ultrasound cover will also be required.

Dorset County Hospital is a busy modern district general hospital situated in the vibrant county town of Dorchester, only 7 miles from the Jurassic coast. The Trust is the main provider of acute hospital services to a population of around 250,000 people, living within Weymouth, Portland, West Dorset, North Dorset and Purbeck.

The Trust has recently secured funding for a new Emergency department and critical care unit to be built in 2026.

The Radiology department achieved Quality Standards for Imaging (QSI) accreditation in 2020 and became one of the first NHS Trusts in the country to achieve the new 2021 standards set by UKAS. We maintained our accreditation following ourassessment in 2023.

The hospital had good rail links to Southampton, Bristol and London and has outstanding nurseries and schools. Dorchester has undergone significant investment and redevelopment in the Brewery Square area and Poundbury, providing new shops, bars and restaurants and residential property.

Dorset offers a brilliant work life balance and it is a great place for families. There is the choice of coast or country for leisure activities such as water sports, wild swimming, coastal walking, horse riding, festivals and historic and cultural towns.

• Perform and independently report on a range of ultrasound examinations dependent upon skills and experience.
• Maintain professional standards and employ best practice in order to provide a high quality, safe ultrasound service.
• Proactivelyparticipate in the development of trainee sonographers and other staff.
