Summary
A Vacancy at Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust.
The successful candidate will join a team of paediatricians and neonatologists providing Child Health services to our local population of approximately 300,000 children. Providing General Paediatric expertise to our outpatient, inpatient, daycare and Emergency Department service, you will work as an acute paediatrician as well as supporting the Oncology and Haemoglobinopathy sub-specialties, working alongside consultant colleagues who are leading the teams in these areas to ensure safe and timely care to children with Haemoglobinopathy and oncology problems. The Trust is a designated POSCU level 1 centre and also looks after more than 350 children with Haemoglobinopathy, being one of the largest centres in the region.
The consultant medical team works across both of our hot sites, Queen’s Hospital, Romford, and King George Hospital, Ilford, and supports junior medical staff to deliver care to patients in all our patient settings.
Job plan requirements fall into 4 main areas;
• 3 x hot weeks in 24 (Queen’s or KGH)
• Hot days - Children’s ED, CYPAU and Hot clinics (5 days over 8 weeks)
• 12 x paediatric clinics over 8 weeks (not ward weeks)
• On calls (Category A) 1 in 7 resident until 7pm (Monday to Friday) and resident from 8.30 – 13:00 on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays (times are under review).
Clinical duties include:
• review of acute admissions of children with malignancy and haemoglobinopathy
• organisation of specialist input (Royal London Children’s Hospital, GOSH/UCLH)
• children attending for transfusions, iron monitoring and adjustment of iron chelation protocol,
• annual review of all children with sickle cell and thalassaemia and initial registration and
• medical assessment of all neonates with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia identified through new-born screening
• outpatient appointments for paediatric haemoglobinopathy patients
• transition planning and management for adolescents with SCD and thalassaemia.
Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.
As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
The successful applicant will work as an acute general paediatrician and along with colleagues the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe and effective care to the CYP attending the child health services.
You will supervise and clinically manage children being cared for in the short stay facilities, attending for procedures and chemotherapy, as well as children recently seen on the unit who require rapid follow up. Responsibility for rapid access clinics for suspected malignancy will be shared and close working with the named doctor, named nurse and other members of the safeguarding team will be required to ensure that the Trust meets its responsibilities in safeguarding children
