Summary

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a Lecturer position in Mathematical foundations and applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning within the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton. This position arises thanks to a significant new investment by the University to support our ambitions to further develop our strengths in this important area.

The position is intended for researchers in mathematical sciences or related quantitative disciplines with interests in the mathematical foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science as well as novel interdisciplinary applications of these to other fields. You will have a track record of excellent research in Mathematics or an aligned discipline with an emphasis on Mathematical Foundations of AI and Machine Learning, ideally with interests that span across to other areas of Mathematical Sciences.

The School of Mathematical Sciences brings together a unique range of disciplines across Mathematical Sciences and is committed to tackling the world’s biggest challenges through interdisciplinary research. We are also founding members of the Southampton Theory, Astrophysics, and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre as well as the Centre for Geometry, Topology, and Applications (CGTA). Academics from Mathematical Sciences are also members of the wider centres of Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems (CORMSIS), and Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI). Members of the School are also investigators in a new consortium “Mathematical Foundations of Intelligence: An ‘Erlangen Programme’ for AI” supported by a £10M grant from the EPSRC, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in this work. We have strong and growing collaborations with Computer Science and Theoretical Physics.

The University of Southampton is part of the Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and has an ethos of promoting collaborative methodological research across disciplinary boundaries.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

a doctorate and postdoctoral experience or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant discipline;
ability to obtain peer-reviewed funding;
evidence of distinction in research through high-quality peer-reviewed publications;
ability for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
