The policy areas for which we have responsibility include the scope-setting, political and strategic, and institutional provisions of Free Trade Agreements.
We are searching for a talented person to support negotiations for the Core Text portfolio and play a central role in our negotiations with partner countries. The Deputy Chapter Lead role will take part in international negotiations with counterparts, developing detailed policy positions and strategies to achieve UK objectives. Cross-Whitehall engagement on legal text and policy positions will also be a large part of the role, along with advising senior officials and ministers on negotiating positions.
The Core Text team is a high performing and supportive team that champions flexible working and values the benefits of diversity and inclusion.
We prioritise the learning and development of our team, with a focus on personal development of the whole team, as well as ensuring we are as knowledgeable and well-equipped as possible to fulfil our roles in negotiating the UK’s independent trade agreements.
Responsibilities will include:
Undertaking detailed trade policy development of Legal & Institutional provisions in FTAs e.g. Initial Provisions, Exceptions, Institutional Provisions.
Supporting the negotiation of Legal & Institutional provisions in DBT’s ambitious negotiating programme, working with the Chapter Lead to deliver effective outcomes for the UK.
Overseeing policy development and advice on policy issues given to senior and ministers on trade issues. This will involve preparing treaty texts, briefings, and explanatory notes.
Quality assurance of proposed treaty text and negotiation parameters, delivering high quality products at pace.
Engaging with Whitehall departments to ensure coherence of policy positions, playing a leading role in cross Whitehall forums, including the Cross Cutting Issues in FTAs Cross Whitehall Working Group.
Close collaborative working with other members of the Core Text and Strategy team, policy leads across the directorate, legal advisers, and country-focused teams.
Working in close partnership with other members of the team to develop a high performing, inclusive, and resilient team.
