Summary

BRAMLEY HEALTH HAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST TO JOIN OUR TEAM AT THE LANGFORD CENTRE.

Bramley Health is a specialist health and social care provider. We support men and women of working age who pose variations of mental health challenges within our services, to maximise their independence to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

This role is based at The Langford Centre, which is a specialist mental health hospital based in Bexhill-on-Sea, that can support up to 73 service users. Split across 4 acute wards, 1 high dependency rehabilitation unit and 1 low secure unit.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist you will be working alongside two other Consultant Psychiatrists, providing continuous medical cover, to one acute wards with a maximum occupancy of 15 male patients.

The post does involve providing providing reciprocal and flexible on-call cover.

KEY DUTIES OF THE CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST

CLINICAL:

o Attend daily morning handover and complete Ward Rounds to address acute medical/psychiatric issues.
o Manage mental health needs of patients as per care plans and clinical needs. Minimum standards as per routine would be as follows:
o Patients should have a physical and mental state examination within 24 hrs of admission
o Patients recently admitted should have a mental state assessment weekly until stabilised.
o Aim to document a mental state examination on all patients at least fortnightly.
o Deviation from minimum standards must be discussed with the patients Responsible Clinician.
o Play a pivotal role in maintaining a full time medical presence in Langford Centre and offering support to other members of the multi-disciplinary team as required.
o Physical Healthcare is primarily provided via external GP facilities, but occasionally acute physical healthcare needs may arise which will require input and management
o Work closely with GP Surgeries and ensure that blood results, clinical results, and so on, are recorded accurately in patients progress notes.
o Take responsibility for the Physical Healthcare Summaries ensuring that they are up to date, accurate and (with the assistance of the Medical Secretary) are available for Consultants at Ward Rounds.
o Monitor and update prescription cards, liaising with the Ward Managers and Responsible Clinicians to ensure accurate and appropriate prescribing.
o Attend all CPAs and Tribunals for non-forensic patients in Langford Centre.
o Play an active part in attending ward rounds as required.
o Attend MDT meetings, including CPAs, MHRTs (at the discretion of The RC), Section 117 meetings. You will ensure that full and up-to-date clinical information is available to the meeting.
o Preparation of CPA and MHA reports, under the supervision of the RC where appropriate.
o Write and send discharge summaries when patients leave the service. These summaries must include medication history and Physical Healthcare Summaries.
o Assess new patients and to document findings on the day of their admission. Reference should be made to the pre-admission assessment report in the notes during the checking in process.
o Participate in an on-call rota with the other Doctors who work at Bramley Health Hospitals.
o Act as nominated deputy for the purposes of Section 5(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007) should the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist be unavailable at the time a decision is needed to be made.
o Participate in treatment plans and therapeutic programmes. This may include participation in Ward Group Programme Delivery.


ADMINISTRATION:

o The successful Consultant Psychiatrist will maintain full records of medical and psychiatric assessments and interventions. Following guidelines and audit requirements and in line with Bramley Healths' standards.
o Play an active role in the audit programme of the Hospital.


EDUCATION:

o You will develop competency frameworks for the therapeutic programme.
o You will attend mandatory training- this includes but not limited to Breakaway, ILS and Mental Health Act.
o You will ensure current medical knowledge is maintained through the use of study leave as agreed through the appraisal system and in discussion with the Hospital Director.
o You will receive regular Clinical Supervision from the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist/Responsible Clinician.
o You will undertake a yearly appraisal and develop agreed targets to support career progression.


ABOUT YOU, THE SUCCESSFUL CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST

o MBBS or Equivalent
o Sec 12 (2) MHA
o MRCPscyh or Equivalent


ELIGIBILITY

o Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies in line with GMC standards in good medical practice
o Eligibility to work in The UK


FITNESS TO PRACTICE

o Applicants knowledge is up to date and is fit to practice safely


KNOWLEDGE

o Up to date knowledge in the fields of adult and forensic psychiatry
o Awareness of recovery principles
o Awareness of Learning Disability
o Awareness of Substance Misuse
o Peer review publication
o Relevant specialist knowledge


EXPERIENCE

o A minimum of 12 months experience at specialty grade level
o Ability to demonstrate sound clinical judgement/experience in decision making and risk management. Know when to seek help
o Experience of MDT team working
o Experience in Adult Secure Settings
o Experience in Drug and Alcohol Services
o Experience in Learning Disability services
o Ability to liaise effectively with partner agencies


AUDIT AND RESEARCH

o Previous experience of audit
o Published audit or original research
