Summary


We are looking for a midwife to specialise in Perinatal Mortality Reviews with the use of the Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT)who is motivated and dynamic, who has an ability to help to promote a culture of safety and learning from clinical understanding and evidence based practice within Maternity.



This midwife will be the specialist in the use of the PMRT resource designed to help clinicians to review the circumstances and care leading up to and surrounding late fetal loss, stillbirth and neonatal death in a systematic way; identifying any sub-optimal care factors whilst developing and embedding action within formal actions plans to mitigate these sub-optimal care factors. Ultimately this specialist midwife will provide parents with information about potential reasons why their baby died through the reports generated through the PMRT resource.



The successful applicant will need to have excellent IT skills, along with great communication, and presentation skills.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Data entry of all perinatal deaths eligible for MBBRACE/PMRT
• Presentation of cases and learning at directorate meetings
• Ensure review by Multidisciplinary team of all eligible cases
• Be a point of contact for the bereaved parents and ensure their feedback is taken into consideration as part of case reviews
• Be the liaison with other units to promote external review of cases
• To share learning from PMRT findings at MDT meetings
• To monitor actions from MDT findings
• To audit and analyse data from the PMRT resource, including writing quarterly reports
• To ensure compliance with CNST action 1, regarding reporting timeframes

Croydon Health Services provides integrated NHS services to care for people at home, in schools, and health clinics across the borough as well as at Croydon University Hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital.



CUH provides more than 100 specialist services and is home to the borough’s only Emergency Department and 24/7 maternity services, including a labour ward, midwifery-led birth centre and the Crocus home birthing team.



Purley War Memorial Hospital (PWMH) in the south of the borough offers outpatient care, including diagnostic services, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services run by Moorfields Eye Hospital, alongside an onsite GP surgery.



Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after for people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

Professional
• Work in accordance with the NMC’s rules and standards for midwives. Ensure that other NMC documents/standards and Trust policies and guidelines are adhered to. Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance with the NMC recommendations
• Ensure high standards of patient care are monitored and maintained by participating in quality assurance programmes.
• Demonstrate good interpersonal skills, and understand the need to communicate effectively with the women, their families, colleagues and multidisciplinary teams.
• Work towards the aims and objectives of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
• Communicate sensitive information to appropriate team professionals/agencies/patients using discretion and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
• Provide emotional support to bereaved families or those who have under gone difficult and traumatic experiences during childbirth.
• Plan, organise and participate in Parent Education in the ward, department and clinics.
• Follow Trust and Maternity Unit Guidelines and participate in the Practice Review and Guidelines groups
• Keep up to date with changes and developments in midwifery care and co-operate in any research projects applicable to the maternity unit.
• Knowledge of the risk management strategy for the maternity service and to ensure that risk trigger events are reported accordingly by using the IRIS forms.
• Child Protection: Knowledge of all issues and when appropriate initiate the referral to social services. Liaise closely and actively participate with social services and other team members.
• Liaise with medical staff as necessary and report any abnormal condition. Liaise with the Supervisor of Midwives for professional issues, which affect the safety of mother and baby.

Clinical
• To provide women-centred care, individualised to the needs of the mother and her family. Acting as a pregnancy loss expert in cases affected by pregnancy loss supporting colleagues in their delivery of care
• Understanding the national bereavement pathway framework and what is required clinically for bereaved parents and families
• Provide care in labour and assessing both mother and baby post birth. Ensuring necessary paperwork is complete at the time.
• Identify and report any changes from the ‘norm’ or emergency situations to senior midwife or obstetric team
• To provide midwifery expertise and advice, working as an autonomous practitioner accountable to the senior midwife
• Able to support completion of essential paperwork for registration of a stillbirth or early neonatal death

Leadership
• To participate in training or observing in the maternity unit
• To be responsible for the orientation of staff attending the unit from all areas of the multidisciplinary team
• To provide telephone or direct advice on maternity and midwifery care to clients and professionals when necessary, and act as a resource for staff when working with women who have had a pregnancy loss.
