Summary


The Urology unit at The Royal Marsden is a multidisciplinary unit which focuses on the management and research of patients with four main urological cancers:
• Prostate
• Bladder
• Renal
• Testicular

The Unit offers a comprehensive oncological urology service providing patients with a complete range of treatment options on site. Expanding diagnostic services provide a one stop clinic which is available to see patients with haematuria, raised PSA or other symptoms of urological cancers. The Unit is also happy to provide a second opinion to patients at any stage of their disease.

The post holder will work under the supervision of Mr Alan Thompson, Mr Pardeep Kumar, Professor David Nicol, Mr Declan Cahill, Mr Eric Mayer and Mr Christopher Ogden and will spend time with the Medical and Clinical Oncologists on site.

The post holder will be expected to ensure adequate support is given to the Urology Team in all aspects of their service.

The successful candidate will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the provision of Urological Services including:

Clinics

The post holder will support new and follow-up urology clinics. This includes diagnostic and surveillance outpatient flexible cystoscopy clinics.

Theatres

The post holder will have the opportunity to participate and be trained in all major urological oncological procedures procedures appropriate to their level of training. Trainees will also be provided training in TRUS/MRI fusion and US guided template biopsies of the prostate. Approximately 3 lists/week also undertake endoscopic lower tract procedures for bladder cancer. Operative exposure also includes multispecialty procedures for pelvic exenteration involving colorectal, urology, gynaecology and plastic surgery.

Academic/Research

The incumbent is expected to play a contributory role in current departmental research, audit, and teaching as well as lead research projects under the supervision of Consultants. Specifically, the post holder will be required to take part in research activities related to robotic surgery
