Summary

The jobholder plays a vital role in managing and providing technical support for radiotherapy equipment using specialist knowledge of mechanical engineering and device design and development, often leading teams and making high-impact decisions independently. They oversee complex and high-value medical equipment, with a focus on quality assurance and clinical risk management. The successful applicant will have substantial experience working in a medical engineering environment backed up with formal clinical technology training. The successful applicant will also be registered (or be in a position to achieve registration within one year) as a clinical technologist, a healthcare scientist, or healthcare science practitioner. Unregistered applicants may be appointed under trainee pay arrangements until registration has been achieved. PRINCIPLE DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Professional & Managerial: - Assist in the management and coordination of technical activity carried out on a broad range of complex radiotherapy equipment throughout the equipments lifecycle. - Empower, motivate & develop others. - Lead teams of staff formed on an ad-hoc basis for major medical equipment work or internal project work. - Produce and update procedures that are relevant to their own area of expertise to maintain the RTS ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. - Teach and train members of staff in own area of expertise. - Carry out and organise internal resource management including work equipment maintenance and store area management. - Ensure that Trust policies and safe working practices are followed by themselves and any personnel who may come under their control. Personal: - Team working, flexibility, initiative, influencing and persuading skills, service focus, ability to learn. - Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Trust staff including those involved with radiotherapy treatment and other relevant professional groups. Technical: - Advanced knowledge of radiotherapy technology including linear accelerators, scanners, and radiotherapy simulators. - Detailed understanding of medical equipment management principles. - Risk assessment and risk management skills. - Highly developed, advanced understanding of fault finding, preventative maintenance & calibration principles for complex equipment. - Advanced interpretation and creation of technical documentation. Medical Equipment Management: - Advanced understanding of RTS procedures, ISO standards, and Medical Device Regulations. - Participate in on-call system for equipment management services outside of normal working hours. Clinical & Scientific Support: - Provide technical services to formal clinical research & development activity and provide expert technical advice based on best industry practice. Management of Information: - Respect patient confidentiality at all times. - Keep accurate and timely records of work completed. - Communicate complex technical information to a range of staff groups within the radiotherapy department and external equipment manufacturers, contractors, and other personnel.
