Purovets are seeking a full-time vet with skills and experience in equine lameness and sports medicine to join the team a dedicated equine-only practice opening in February 2024 to care for the horses, ponies and donkeys of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. They will offer comprehensive first opinion equine veterinary services on the road, backed up with a fully-equipped clinic providing inpatient care, diagnostic and operating facilities.

The ideal candidate will be someone who wants to be their clinical best in a practice that values individual patient care and excellent client care. Good communication skills are a must and who you are is as important as your level of experience. A minimum of three years' experience is required, together with skills in lameness diagnostics and therapeutics. The ideal candidate will have or be working towards an additional qualification such as the Cert. AVP (ELDT).

Applicants should enjoy the freedom of ambulatory work but also appreciate the opportunity to use their skills in a clinic environment. While the role is that of a general equine vet carrying out routine work, it is hoped that internal referrals will boost the lameness and sports medicine caseload and allow you to develop your client base. Most of the work is ambulatory within a thirty-minute drive of the practice to minimise travel time. The majority of the horses you will see are leisure/competition horses with an increasing geriatric population and a few clients with donkeys, all of whose owners appreciate a practice which is happy to discuss every treatment option.

The five-strong equine vet team is supported by 3 experienced RVNs and a vet tech plus two equine coordinators and a practice manager. The standard working week is 4 days plus OOH, currently 1:6 nights and weekends. You are on call from home so do not have to stay on site and phone calls are taken by a duty nurse. Normal working hours are 8.30am to 6.30pm, depending on workload. CPD is encouraged and funded, including higher qualifications, with an allowance of £1,250 and 5 days per annum. The holiday allowance is 6.6 weeks, increasing with length of service. They offer private medical cover, discounted gym membership, lunches, staff dog kennels and frequent social events.

The equine clinic incorporates a spacious treatment room with heat lamps, a non-slip rubber floor and stocks. There is an operating theatre, five stables and two turnout paddocks for in-patients and day cases. Visiting surgeons carry out more complex procedures and they refer abdominal surgeries.
Their facilities for lameness and neurological examinations include a concrete trot up area, slope and hard lunge area. Plans are underway to build a soft lunge area in 2024.

From their location in the rural Chilterns, you will have access to excellent rail links to London for evenings and weekends, and being centrally located have good road/rail/airport access to the rest of the country and abroad. The local countryside is perfect for leisure and outdoor sports and the nearby picturesque towns and villages have a wide range of restaurants, shops, and markets.
