Summary


The post holder will work as part of the Patient Escort team providing a 24 hour, 7 days per week efficient and effective patient movement / transportation service to the Trust and will combine both supervisory and patient escort duties.

The post holder will assist the management team in ensuring the service runs smoothly and effectively on a daily basis with responsibility for contributing to providing a high quality and responsive Patient Escort service to the Trust and its patients ensuring that patients retain their dignity, privacy and individuality at all times whilst maintaining patient and staff confidentiality.

The post holder will play a key role in the leadership of the Patient Escort staff, delegating where necessary and ensuring appropriate allocation and monitoring of workload.

To adopt a caring and friendly manner at all times.

Working 37.5 hours per week between 6am and 8pm on a 5 week rota basis which will include weekends and bank holidays.

Ensure that the appropriate level of service is provided 24 hours per week, 365 days per year.

Assist where appropriate in the investigation of any complaint regarding the service.

To develop and maintain performance and quality standards.

To demonstrate leadership, development and motivation of the team.

Report any faults on the equipment.

Escalate issues which may have an adverse effect on the service provision.

Administration duties required to ensure the department operates efficiently & effectively on a daily basis.

Allocate jobs including planning of rotas to ensure sufficient staffs are on duty.

Main duties are as above as well as the following:

Patient Escort Duties

Ensure the safe handling and lifting of patients and the movements of patients via wheelchair, trolley, bed, PAT slide, hoists, internal ambulance or people carrier to all wards and departments.

Assist the nursing team whilst transporting patients who are on ventilators/medical gas etc.

Assist with the transportation of patients relatives if and when required.

Transfer deceased patients to the mortuary in a dignified manner ensuring the safe opening and closing of the mortuary in the absence of mortuary personnel, all relevant paperwork required by mortuary personnel is available and to check that patients valuables (eg., jewellery) are in order with the transfer sheet for mortuary.

Ensure that patient movement requests are actioned promptly.

Observe a duty of care in performing all tasks, safeguarding oneself, patients, staff, visitors and others.

Inform the supervisory/management team of any untoward incident.

Following appropriate training, assist colleagues based in other areas of the Trust with Patient Escort services.

Provide Patient Escort cover to departmental areas that have their own staff with patient movement as and when required.

Ensure that all patient escort work related areas are maintained to agreed levels of cleanliness and tidiness.

To report to their immediate supervisor/line manager any issue which may affect acceptable levels of cleanliness and tidiness eg., faulty or broken equipment/accessories.

Respond to requests for medical gases from wards and departments.

Check medical valves are in working order, reporting any fault to the ward staff and other appropriate personnel.

Assist with the changeover of medical gases on manifolds throughout the Trust.

Assist the nursing team in the changeover of medical gases at ward level.

Adhere to health & safety and departmental procedures relating to the security of the Gas stores.

Provide a transportation service throughout the Trust of bloods, samples, fluids, medication, notes, x-rays, snack boxes and other such items directly related to patient care.

Provide an emergency collection service of blood samples in the event of pneumatic tube failure.

Communication

To have accountability to call centre staff who will prioritise patient movement requests.

Liaise with clinical staff where appropriate as to the requirements/needs of the individual patient being transferred.

Report and relay to appropriate personnel information regarding queries/problems relating to patient movement.

Ensure that the pager is fit for daily use, test batteries each day and report any fault to your immediate supervisor/line manager.

Respond to Cardiac Arrest bleep in the event of in capacity as Team Leader.

Maternity Unit

Patient Escort provides a service to the Maternity Unit. Staff based within this area will be required to undertake duties in addition to the items listed above. These duties will include:

Removal of domestic, confidential & clinical waste

Collection of dirty linen

Removal of stillages to docking area

Collection and delivery of drugs to and from Pharmacy

Collection of bloods from lab

Collection and delivery of blood reports

Collection of Anti D from labs
