Summary

A Vacancy at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

We are recruiting for a newly created post in for a Consultant in Respiratory and Acute medicine to be based at Ealing Hospital.

The Respiratory ward at Ealing is a 34 bedded unit - 6 South. This includes a 6 bedded Enhanced Respiratory Unit. There are currently three (3.0wte) Respiratory Consultants cover 6 South, the respiratory outlier patients and share responsibility for respiratory referrals. The respiratory team is responsible for non-invasive ventilation on 6S and other wards, as appropriate.

In the future we aspire to run one cross-site Consultant rota to cover the Respiratory wards of both Northwick Park and Ealing Hospital.

There is a pleural ultrasound and procedure service at Northwick Park Hospital, with 3 clinics per week, which includes insertion of indwelling pleural catheters. We also aim to develop a Respiratory pleural service at Ealing Hospital with support from interventional radiology.

Fibreoptic bronchoscopy is again carried out on all 3 sites.

The opportunities for training and teaching junior doctors are substantial and provide an attractive component of this post. We would expect the post holders to take the lead in regular appraisals for their junior staff.

The post holder will contribute to the acute on-call rota covering emergency admissions and ambulatory care at the Ealing site. Currently the General medical on-call commitment is approximately 1 in 15 and the on-call consultant covers 5-9pm in evening and corresponding next morning 7-9 am post take. A typical medical take is 30-40 patients per 24 hours and reflected within the job plan as 1 PA /DCC. Time off in lieu is given and reflected in the departmental rota.

The acute on-call rota for the Ealing site is under a process of change to reflect the increased non elective demands of the trust. The new on call rota will have an allocation of 2 PA for acute on-call duties and will deliver seven days of twelve-hour day shift worked at a frequency of 1 in 14. Until this rota is introduced (anticipated Autumn 2024) the second PA for acute on-call will be utilised for specialist clinic activity when the post holder is not on the wards. As per the job plan for the weeks allocated to the ward the acute on-call PA’s are not assigned and time off in lieu will be given and reflected in the departmental rota.

The post is offered as a DCC/SPA split of 7.5 DCC/2.5 SPA

Candidates are encouraged to visit the hospital and to discuss the post with all consultants and any other members of staff they wish.

Applicants must possess MRCP and be within six months of obtaining a CCST in respiratory and general medicine. The applicant must be in possession of a valid GMC Registration.
