Summary
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and dynamic pharmacist to join our critical care team to lead in the delivery of clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation service to critical care patients.
You will be working as a consultant pharmacist to provide complex pharmaceutical care to patients, optimising their medications and ensuring high quality evidence based prescribing. You will also undertake own research and collaborate and support other healthcare professionals in practice based research.
The Royal Cornwall hospital pharmacy department is a forward thinking and friendly team with full deployment of electronic prescribing and administration in the inpatient and outpatient setting and fully automated dispensing. We provide an innovative clinical pharmacy service, combining technology and clinical pharmacy expertise. We are a recognised national leader for innovation in fields such as antimicrobial resistance and the adoption of Scan4Safety standards, as was recognised in the 2019 HSJ Patient Safety Awards. All these functions are supported by an excellent wholesale dealer supply service, a well-equipped licensed pharmacy technical services unit and the full range of medicines optimisation support services including medicines information, education and training, formulary support and digital medicines. We have also recently had the funding for a new pharmacy department confirmed as part of a new investment which includes a new Women’s and Children’s hospital.

To lead a team delivering patient centred clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation service to critical care patients and the wider critical care unit at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
To contribute to the Governance agenda within critical care at a senior level by strategically leading, managing and co-ordinating the provision of pharmacy services for critically unwell patients, ensuring high quality, safe and cost-effective care across the anaesthetics, critical care & theatres (ACCT) care group.
To act as role model in critical care at local, regional and national level.
To identify and mitigate risks relating to pharmaceutical practices, and ensure optimal use of technology to ensure safe and effective use of medications and the wider pharmacy service.
To lead and deliver education and training relating to pharmaceutical care and management of the critically unwell to Cornwall-wide healthcare professionals and the southwest region.
To lead in the development of guidance relating to safe medication use within critical care, sharing and developing best practice across the region.
Using innovation and new development to shape critical care pharmaceutical management in line with Trust and National priorities.
To lead and develop audit, quality improvement and research in critical care and publish research outcomes.
To provide expert advice to clinicians regarding highly complex pharmaceutical management to critically unwell patients prior to critical care admission, after discharge, and during rehabilitation in the community.
To act as a non-medical prescriber and where appropriate manage patients independently.
To ensure compliance with medicines legislation, statutory, regulatory, and National standard requirements across the ACCT care group
