As one of the Midwifery Manager's for Central Delivery Suite will provide managerial support and direct line management for midwifery and support staff whilst maintaining a high level of clinical skills and practice. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the team.

To provide a high standard of woman-centred care in a multi professional complex setting in Central Delivery Suite including the theatre suite. To be an expert and professional role model for others in the field of intrapartum care and women’s health to offer advise that so that they can also achieve a high standard of women-centred care. This includes junior midwives, junior doctors, midwifery and AHP students
To have continuing responsibility for the leadership for the midwifery/ nursing supervision and management of midwives, nurses, students and maternity support workers in Women and Children’s on a day-to-day basis and in the absence of the Matron
This post will provide the clinical and managerial leadership with the Matron taking responsibility for providing a clear focus for the profession and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the service. You will be responsible for ensuring that they and their team act in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession. You will be working in collaboration with the Matron and Speciality team.



Our maternity services provide a full range of maternity care. Our midwives, doctors, and maternity care workers are committed to providing personalised care to the highest standard.

The service is based at Southmead Hospital and provides a range of obstetric services for those who live in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

The maternity department is one of the largest in the country, was awarded Good by the CQC has 5200 births each year offering a choice of 4 places of birth.

A Consultant led Unit with HDU rooms , birthing rooms and a pool room. The antenatal ward hosts triage, day assessment and inpatient ward. The postnatal ward prides itself on giving quality care for new mothers, families and babies.

There is an Alongside Midwifery Unit , a Freestanding Midwifery Unit at Cossham Hospital , and Home Birth Team. There are highly skilled midwifery teams who value the autonomy and varied responsibilities of these areas.

The Maternity services are well renowned nationally and internationally, having created and developed PROMPT and has a wide research portfolio. Room 10 is a truly multi-disciplinary hub room on delivery suite which demonstrates the value of working alongside others with professionalism and safety.

The midwifery ward sister will provide managerial support and direct line management for delivery suite and theatres whilst maintaining a high level of clinical skills and practice.

Be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the team. Provides professional and managerial leadership.

Be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Manages staff, rotas, and undertakes recruitment and selection

This post will provide the clinical and managerial leadership with the Matron taking responsibility for providing a clear focus for the profession and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the service. They will be responsible for ensuring that the team act in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession.

Working in collaboration with the Matron and Specialty team the individual will be expected to:


• Participate in activity with the Specialist team to manage and develop the service in line with local and national requirements ensuring the delivery of performance targets;
• Line manage a team of staff working within delivery suite;
• Work closely with Matron to ensure the efficient and effective running of area of responsibility;
• Have overall responsibility for ensuring their clinical area is safe
• Deputise for the Matron and form part of the Directorate senior team;
• Contribute to the development of patient-centred services;
• Be responsible for successful attainment of Trust and National quality and safety objectives within area of responsibility; and
• Provide expert clinical advice and care within designated area of
• Work clinically on delivery suite if required and to maintain clinical skills.





Leadership

The post holder will have continuing responsibility for leadership, supervision and management of midwives or nurses, students and clinical support workers ensuring delivery of a professional, efficient and cost-effective service, in the absence of the Matron

To maintain a high standard of evidence-based care for women and their families through:

Development of evidence-based guidelines

Keeping up to date with developments in professional practice and share with staff.

Membership of the appropriate Clinical Teams forums for development of professional guidelines, best practice and contribution to the Directorate Risk Management Strategy.

To lead on the recruitment and selection of midwifery and nursing staff for the Directorate To assist in the management of the induction and orientation of new staff to the Directorate To assist in the management of sickness according to Trust Sickness Policy.

To ensure all staff receive an annual appraisal and have clear objectives that link in with the Trust objectives in support of ongoing professional development.

To support the principles of life-long learning, ensuring continuous professional development for all staff, encouraging and enabling individuals to reach their full potential.

To ensure all staff undertake annual mandatory updates and training and other relevant courses in line with Trust policy.

To facilitate and chair staff meetings as/when appropriate

To be a professional role model for others, demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice, forming good relationships with women and their families, and presenting a positive image at all times.



To challenge poor practice, with appropriate channels of support, and ultimately to instigate any necessary competency/disciplinary procedures with the Matron or supervisor of midwives team.

To have a good working knowledge of health and safety e.g. manual handling and safe disposal of waste and sharps and to be responsible for identifying, assessing and managing potential risk

To be competent in the computerised information technology and use it to generate statistics and audit.

To contribute to the development of a learning environment for students of midwifery, nursing and medicine

Deputise for the Matron in her absence and as required

To be able to investigate and respond to complaints in line with the Trust guidance

Clinical Responsibilities

To be a clinical expert and resource within midwifery, neonatal or gynaecological nursing To promote an environment where safety for the mother/woman and baby is paramount.

To ensure staff attendance at Trust mandatory updates including Directorate Intrapartum Study Days for midwives and maternity care assistants

To be responsible for the maintenance, storage and safety of equipment.

To ensure staff are trained in the use of medical and resuscitation equipment.

To be involved in the clinical governance agenda, participating in midwifery/nursing and medical audit, investigating clinical incidents and adverse outcomes in liaison with the clinical risk manager, and taking a lead role in subsequent change process. To be knowledgeable regarding the Trust’s Risk Management objectives.

To obtain women’s/parent’s informed consent and discuss with them the implications of care plans and procedures. This will include explaining clearly to them the benefits and risks of different care approaches, alternatives available, and the implications of any decisions taken by them, particularly if the decisions are not consistent with professional advice.

To challenge any threat to equality and diversity in the workplace, ensuring legislation is conformed to and staff have access to all necessary training (e.g. Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, Learning Disabilities)

To have an awareness and a working understanding of child protection issues in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and know who to contact within the Trust for further help and guidance

To initiate Directorate child protection procedures whilst utilising the appropriate documentation in all cases where concerns are present

Financial and Resource Responsibilities

To be responsible for effective resource management, maintaining stock levels e.g. stores and pharmacy in line with budgetary requirements, and initiating action to remedy deficiencies To be responsible for finances and human resources issues within the clinical area Strategic and Operational Responsibilities

To audit elements of care and care outcomes when requested

To be involved in implementation of Government reports within the Directorate To influence the advancement of practice throughout the Directorate and Trust, Personal Professional Responsibilities.

To be professionally accountable for one’s own professional practice, acting in a professional manner at all times, abiding by the ‘The Code’ and all relevant NMC and Trust guidelines

To undertake annual mandatory training updates and other relevant courses in line with Trust and local policies

To maintain accurate and legible records (written and electronic) in accordance with Trust and national policies and guidelines.
