We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

The Upper GI team are part of the general surgeons based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The Northern Oesophagoagstric Unit is one of the busiest Upper GI cancer resection units in the country. You will join a team of four other surgeons providing care for oesophagoagstric patients, complex benign Upper GI problems and the breadth of general surgery.

Additionally, the department is moving towards a split on call with both an upper and lower GI consultant. This will be on 1:8 rotational basis for days and 1:16 nights.

You must be able to work effectively and efficiently with a team, managing patients with emergency presentations and integrate into a sub-specialty team.

You will provide an expert opinion, investigate and manage those patients presenting to the Department of Upper GI Surgery in Newcastle.Primarily you will be contributing to the management, delivery and development of the Upper GI service. You will have responsibility for patient care within this department with a contribution to the management of those with both benign and malignant Upper GI disorders.

Management of these problems will involve appropriate modern surgical techniques and close team working involving radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, and oncologists to ensure the best outcomes possible for the people of the North East of England and beyond referred for an Upper GI opinion.You will take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a secondary and tertiary centre. You will be expected to attend and actively contribute to the weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.

Managerial:
• Work in the specific clinical area of Upper GI Surgery
• To manage clinics / theatre lists managing care for their chosen subspecialty.
• Participate in all aspects of clinical governance making a significant contribution to multidisciplinary audit and risk management activities.
• Assist the Surgical Services Directorate Manager and Clinical Director in the timely investigation of complaints – working to provide reports within the timeframe set out by Trust policy.
• To efficiently manage the teaching and training programmes, lead undergraduate teaching, educational focus groups, ARCP panels, recruitment, allocating educational supervision, leading Foundation School visits, managing rota gaps and responding to GMC and HEENE surveys.

Administrative:
• Undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of your patients and in relation to the running of yours subspecialty interest and EGS patients.
• You will be entitled to become a member of the Medical Staff Committee of the hospital.
• To undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives.
• Become involved with the financial management of the department – at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high quality care to agreed standards but at the same time, reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources.
• To efficiently utilise theatre lists (including actively seeking additional theatre lists where appropriate with the job plan).
• To efficiently manage ones diary, including on-call provisions. To work closely with colleagues to achieve this.
• To have efficient, appropriate working relationships with the administrative and nursing team.
• To build efficient working relationships with all trainees including Physician associates /Surgical care practitioners/Surgical assistants.

Research/Innovation:
• To collaborate with academic institutions to further research profile of the department.
• The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high profile activity that compliments the service.
• Continue to publish in peer-reviewed journals

Teaching and Training:
• Provide leadership to teaching of undergraduate medical students from the University of Newcastle in the investigation and management of General Surgical/ Emergency conditions.
• Deliver teaching to Foundation, Core and Specialty trainees in either informal or formal settings (e.g. Newcastle Surgical Training Centre, regional SpR teaching programme).
• To be a willing and competent surgical mentor in the education of the surgical craft (to junior and senior trainees).
• To reflect on feedback to maintain the high educational standards expected of the Trust and HEENE.
• To understand and clearly demonstrate the professional behaviours required of a dedicated educational/clinical supervisor.
• Participate in the teaching and training of any other health care professionals (e.g. Physician Associates) within the Directorate.
