Our infant feeding service is well established and we have built up a proud reputation for quality and excellence thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff.

The Broxbourne Public Health Nursing 0-5 Team has an exciting opportunity for a part-time Band 3 (22.5 hrs/week) Infant Feeding Support Worker to join us for a fixed term period until the end of March 2025. The post holder must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate collaborative working.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our friendly, supportive team. You will be working alongside our Public Health Nurses and HCT Infant Feeding Co-ordinators to maintain our BFI accreditation.

All applicants to please detail their experience of supporting breastfeeding/infant feeding.

The successful candidate will:
• Under the direction of the Public Health Nurse deliver a planned intervention of information, advice and support for infant feeding.

Operational
• Signpost and provide information for parents, communicating in an understandable form.
• Provide support for mothers with complex breastfeeding issues who have been assessed by a Public Health Nurse and have a feeding plan in place.
• Manage own workload under the guidance of the Public Health Nurse.
• Work alongside the Public Health Nurse in the specialist breastfeeding clinics
• Feedback the views and needs of clients to the Public Health Nurse following each contact.
• Actively support the planning of breastfeeding support groups.
• Work with the Infant Feeding Co-ordinators to deliver breastfeeding and relationship training and other relevant courses for all staff groups.
• Support the Infant Feeding Co-ordinators in the planning and delivery of public health activities including initiatives to raise the profile of responsive feeding within the population of Hertfordshire, production of display materials to promote responsive feeding and breastfeeding and the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
• Develop and implement projects to increase the incidence and maximisation of breastfeeding in Hertfordshire.
• Ensure provider services and their premises comply with the WHO Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and remain compliant with the principles of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
• Work within recognised best practice standards for breastfeeding as recommended by UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative and NICE Guidelines.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Infant Feeding Coordinators who hold continuing responsibility for achieving UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation.
• Work within the framework of the local Safeguarding Children’s Boards procedures and participate in safeguarding supervision with appropriate training and guidance, recognise indicators of child abuse, reporting concerns to the Public Health Nurse.

Patient/Customer Care
• Conduct oneself in a corporate and professional manner at all times.
• Ensure that the client and carer is central to the assessment of care and planning in partnership with all relevant professionals
• Ensure Hertfordshire Community Trust policies, guidelines and protocols are adhered to and reflected in day to day practice.
• Recognise the importance of making appropriate and timely referrals as required.
• Ability to recognise any variance in the child/young person’s condition and report to the Public Health Nurse in a timely and accurate way.
• Identify to the Infant Feeding Co-ordinators any short falls in service
• Maintain a culture of person-centred care within the service area
• Promote a caring environment where equality & diversity issues are respected and patients/clients and carers are enabled to be partners in their care.
• Utilise a range of methods for engaging with and responding to patients/clients to ensure they have a positive experience in community settings.
• Identify opportunities for meaningful involvement of patients/clients and carers in relation to the development of care and services.
• Ensure compliments and complaints are handled in line with Trust policy
• Ensure all incidents and accidents are reported appropriately in line with Trust policy.

Strategic Management
• Support the process of client and user satisfaction feedback to help develop service provision
• Participate in the development and expansion of the service
• Undertake regular UNICEF Baby Friendly audits to ensure compliance with UNICEF’s Baby Friendly standard
• Work with the Infant Feeding Co-ordinators to address any action points identified following audits.
• Promote own personal and others health, safety and security taking the appropriate action to report risk in accordance with policy.

Service Development and Improvement
• Work effectively within policies, procedures and guidelines including the Trust’s Confidentiality Policy and the Data Protection Act 1998.
• Take personal responsibility to ensure that all mandatory updates are attended in line with Trust Policy.
• Attend infant feeding training and update sessions to ensure continued learning about responsive feeding, breastfeeding, introducing solid food, best practice for delivering effective infant nutrition care and delivery of public health programmes.
• Ensure that Clinical Governance issues are addressed in conjunction with the Public Health Nurse.
• Participate in the review of new policies or procedures within the department.
• Develop self through reflective practice, identifying professional development needs and accessing training and development opportunities.

Management and Leadership
• Support the development and induction of new team members, by participating in programmes of learning for members of the team.

Communication and Relationship Building
• Establish clear and effective communication links with children/young people, parents/carers, education staff, family support workers and a range of other professionals from both voluntary and statutory organisations enabling planned care to take place.
• Be sensitive to the needs of children, young people and their carers who may have communication problems.
• Where English is not the first language or understanding limited identify appropriate resources to optimise understanding for parents and young people.
• Contribute to the process for ensuring that staff are kept up to date with UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative standards and information from Department of Health, East of England and other organisations is disseminated.
• Support the Infant Feeding Co-ordinators to provide and receive information using persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training empathetic or reassurance skills, where there could be barriers to understanding.
• Listen appropriately and take into account any sensitive issues and communicate these to appropriate persons/agencies ensuring that children are protected and that disclosures are acted upon appropriately.
• Convey complex information clearly to patients, carers and other professionals both in verbal and written form.
• Ensure all records are accurate, contemporaneous and regularly updated, according to local and national guidelines.
• Verbal, written and electronic clinical record keeping must be of the highest standards.
• Demonstrate empathy, compassion and ability to reassure

Information Management
• Work Independently, using electronic patient health records to manage and update children’s health records including the routine entry and updating of data.
• Be able to provide data to others and produce simple reports or lists in response to queries raised. A high degree of accuracy is necessary.
• Contribute and develop innovations in areas quality standards setting and clinical effectiveness.
• To participate in clinical governance audit projects within local service.
• Act in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Information Governance Policy to ensure confidentiality and protection of client information.


Finance and Resource Management
• Be financially aware in order to manage the HCT resources appropriately and effectively.
• Ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively, ensuring equipment is used and maintained properly.

Policy and Service
• To work independently accessing appraisal within an Individual Performance.
• Framework at pre-determined intervals ensuring that the objectives set reflect the Service and Trust plans, including specific objectives relating to working with children.
• Demonstrate continuous personal development and compliance with mandatory training, maintenance of competencies required for the role.
• Attend relevant training (courses, meetings, special interest groups) in order to maintain and develop skills and knowledge required of a specialist therapist working in this field.
• Actively participate in reflective clinical supervision with peers/clinical supervisor in order to develop and enhance practice.
• Accurately record all data and client contacts in accordance with Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust policies and procedures, in light of Caldicott principles and Clinical Governance, including information that may be required for Safeguarding Children, audit and research purposes.
• Use appropriate IT equipment with regards to confidentiality and Caldicott Guidelines.
